Melanie Robertson-King ~ Author interview

October 8, 2012 by Patricia Sands

It’s always such a pleasure to support a fellow author. Melanie Robertson-King has just launched her first novel, the paranormal romance A Shadow In The Past. She is also a  member of the fun-loving party animals and talented group of writers and readers I feel privileged to be part of at loveahappyending.com.

The majority of members in this group are from the UK so we often feel like we are hopping back and forth across the Atlantic … virtually, that is!  Melanie has been busily flitting from one continent to the other as her blog tour rolls out so please excuse any jet lag!

She’s dropped by for a chat, so without further ado … *drum roll, please* … here’s Melanie!

PS: When did you first begin writing with a serious thought to publishing?

MR-K: That would have been in the mid-2000s when I signed up for a creative writing course. Prior to that, I wrote (not necessarily very well) for my own enjoyment.

PS: How did your interest develop in this genre?

MR-K: I guess my interest in the paranormal (time-travel) element came from reading Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander novels.

PS: What was your inspiration for A Shadow in the Past?

MR-K: I’d been to the area of Scotland where my father was born on a few occasions and the beauty of Aberdeenshire and the friendliness of the folks I met begged a story. Even back then, I took events from the news and spun my story around them. In that case, it was a school bus that lost a wheel. A Shadow in the Past began as an overgrown short story called Sarah’s Gift.

PS: Writing does tend to consume our life and for most of us it is a labour of love. When you do take time for other things, how do you like to spend time?

MR-K: I’m an avid reader so I spend a lot of time doing that (ebooks or paper). I love to travel, although these past few years haven’t been able to do as much as I would have liked. I’m also interested in photography and genealogy.

PS: Where do you call home and have you always lived there?

MR-K: My parents moved from Maitland to Brockville before I started school and I’ve always lived in or around the city ever since. The furthest away was Mallorytown (about 15 miles west).

PS: What do you see happening next with your writing once this book is launched?

MR-K: Once A Shadow in the Past is launched, my plan is to write the sequel. A Shadow in the Past started out much longer than the finished version, so what was “Part 2” is going to be a standalone book, possibly called Shadows from her Past or Shadows of her Past. I’ve not decided completely yet.

PS: What would you say have been the most important lessons you have learned about writing and publishing a novel to this point?

MR-K: My writing didn’t start out perfect, much as I wanted it to think it was. Even though my novel was polished to gleaming when I landed my contract, there were still changes that needed to be made to improve it.

PS: One piece of advice for a new writer would be _________________

MR-K: Develop a thick skin. If you’re planning on going the traditional route, you’ll receive a number of reject letters. And no matter how much you try to tell yourself you won’t let them get to you, they do. Keep submitting. Study the publisher’s guidelines and make sure that your work fits what they’re looking for.

A Shadow in the Past

When a contemporary teen is transported back through time to the Victorian era, she becomes A Shadow in the Past…

When nineteen year old Sarah Shand finds herself in Victorian Era Aberdeenshire, Scotland, she has no idea how she got there. Her last memory is of being at the stone circle on the family farm in the year 2010.

Despite having difficulty coming to terms with her situation, Sarah quickly learns she must keep her true identity a secret.

Still, she feels stifled by the Victorians’ confining social practices, including arranged marriages between wealthy and influential families, confronts them head on and suffers the consequences.

When Sarah realizes she has fallen in love with the handsome Laird of Weetshill, she faces an agonizing decision. Does she try to find her way back to 2010 or remain in the past with the man she loves?

My corner of the world

September 18, 2012 by Patricia Sands

This week my friend, author Sheryl Browne, invited me across the pond (only *virtually* unfortunately) to chat with her about where I live and where I fantasize about living! I took a welcome break from *revision world* where I’m still hunkered down but making progress.

Sheryl has been running a series about our home towns with some of the authors in our LOVEAHAPPYENDING.COM literary group. It’s great fun to learn more about each other although those of you that know me will not be the least surprised at my answers.

Here’s a bit of the post and if you click right here you can visit Sheryl’s website to read the rest and leave a comment. Take a few minutes to check out her hilarious and entertaining novels. There’s never a dull moment in her stories!

“With our children grown, we now live in a condo overlooking Lake Ontario with hiking and biking trails outside our door and a fabulous Italian restaurant just a few minutes’ walk away.

An easy 15-minute drive takes us to the heart of the downtown area and just a little longer gets us to Pearson International Airport. Public transport is readily available and, like most cities, Toronto is dotted with delightful neighbourhoods that have their own distinct character.

This is part of the view as we bike or walk along the lake. From time to time we bike right downtown in just 45 minutes.

So why would I ever want to leave? Um … well …I do have a confession to make. Hmm – I believe your next questions covers this subject.

SB: My next question is: Do you like to travel? Where is your favourite place in the world and why? I think I can see you do, Patricia. And I can definitely see why.”

Where is your corner of the world and what do you like best about it? If you could live elsewhere, where would you choose?

The Dash – what are you doing with yours?

September 14, 2012 by Patricia Sands

If it’s Friday, it must be France … will be back next week …

As you know, I’m deep in revision world and the work is going well. This afternoon I stepped away for a couple of hours to attend a moving celebration of life for an old friend and wonderful person.

This poem was read by one of her children. I had never heard it before and it touched me deeply so I want to share it with you. When I googled the poem The Dash by Linda Ellis, I discovered there was also a YouTube video. Many of you may well have seen this before but it’s well worth the 2-1/2 minutes to watch again.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zsY6UrFIsNs

Our friend, Karen, spent her dash in the best possible way and this was celebrated with love and joy mingled with sorrow at her passing. It was agreed by everyone there, she would have been humbled and proud today. The legacy she left of her dash certainly caused me to think about mine. Does this poem inspire you to think about what you are doing with yours?

Cover reveal!

September 12, 2012 by Patricia Sands

I wish I could say it was the cover for my next novel but I’m not there yet! However Angela Wallace is right on track for her new paranormal release, Earth Tones, and this is the day we all get to see the fabulous cover!

I am always impressed and amazed by authors who write in very specific genres with such talent and imagination. Paranormal romance, mystery, murder, intrigue, fantasy, suspense, creating other worlds … how do they do it? With a great deal of talent, that’s for certain!

To read more about Earth Tones and be captured by the story line, please visit Angela’s blog by clicking right here … after you admire the cover, of course! Here it is … drum roll please … tadaaaaaaa …

Who is Angela Wallace? If you don’t already know, read on.

Angela Wallace has been penning adventures ever since she was sucked through a magical portal as a child. What she saw and whom she met gave birth to exciting and complex fantasy worlds where defying the laws of physics was a bonus. She has since come back down to earth, only to discover this mortal realm has magic of its own. Now she is quite at home in the world of urban fantasy, though believes that love, faith, and hope are of a stronger magic than fire wielding and sorcery. She loves gun-toting good boys, and could have been a cop in another life except real blood makes her queasy. She’ll have to stick to solving supernatural mysteries. Language is her pleasure, whether it’s weaving words on a page or lassoing linguistics into translations as a sign language interpreter. Angela is currently working on her next book.

Take a few minutes to see the book trailer too!

Congratulations, Angela! You’ve done it again!
