‘Tis the luscious lavender season

July 4, 2015 by Patricia Sands

IMG_6002If it’s Friday, it must be France …

“Lavender is the soul of Provence” ~ Jean Giono, author of The Man Who Planted Trees (A quick 4000 word short story you will enjoy.)

It’s that time of year again in France! Lavender season is at its peak. I was never an avid fan of the scent until my husband and I drove up through the lavender fields a number of years ago so … no surprise here … I could take photos. When we opened the car door and stepped out, we were enveloped in a calming fragrance that was both intense and delicate. I wish I could add that to these photos, but I hope somehow the magic of it comes through.

Small growers and private gardens create patchwork quilt views through the countryside.

Where there is lavender, there will be bees. Delicious honey is one of the many offshoots of lavender production. Try it with goat cheese or in a salade de chèvre chaud. Yum!

Explore the back roads and stop in to buy from local producers.

The Cistercian monks of the 12th century Abbaye de Sénanque continue the ancient tradition in an isolated valley near Gordes. It’s a “must” stop on the lavender trail.

Visit early in the morning to avoid tour buses and find the best light for your photos. This photo was taken early in the season, about two weeks before the peak of glorious color.

And other times, the fields seem to go as far as the eye can see. It’s almost hypnotizing.

A visit to the Musée de la Lavande in the hameau de Coustellet, near Avignon, is advised and guided tours are available in seven languages. Learn the difference between lavender and lavandin and the way they are grown and used. Discover the natural benefits of the essential oil produced and be sure to inspect the collection of stills dating back to the 16th century.

Of course, if you aren’t in the neighbourhood at this time of year,  local markets will always have plenty of lavender products to tempt you year round.

One day ~ deux fêtes

June 20, 2015 by Patricia Sands

If it’s Friday, it must be France …

Since I sent my manuscript for Book #3 in the Love in Provence series off to my editor at Amazon’s Lake Union Publishing, I’m taking a week off to be a somewhat normal person. For me, that means without being attached at the hip to my laptop. Well, maybe not completely … I’m making notes and researching my next book too.

In the next week or two, we’ll reveal the new title for Book #3, edits will get under way and my break will be over. C’est ma vie … and I love it!

I know I missed posting this on Friday, and it’s actually Saturday, so please excusez-moi! It’s incredibly easy to lose track of days here in Nice … the weather is beautiful and there’s just SO much to do.

IMG_0881

Take today, for example, this morning I popped a couple of streets over

book-cover-for-sidebar-on-blog-140-220-120from where we’re staying and had a cappuccino and croissant (they just go together, don’t they?) with Margo Lestz. She recently published a new book, “Curious Histories of Nice, France”, which I downloaded last week and can’t wait to read! Margo always discovers the quirkiest information about this part of the world! She’s fortunate to live here full time. *colour me green … just like that eye-catching book cover*

After that, I met up with my two friends who are visiting  Nice with me and we took a stroll through the grand hotel Le Negresco. You just can’t visit Nice without taking in the history and beauty of this mythic landmark.

IMG_0641

IMG_0639

Next, we had a quick lunch at one of the many beach restaurants, just across the street. As you can see, it was another beautiful day with the Med gleaming.

IMG_0651 IMG_0643

After lunch, we crossed the street, again, to spend a few hours taking in the excellent exhibit of vintage photographs and art explaining the history of Nice at the Musée Massena.

Tomorrow is June 21 and every hamlet, village, town and city in France will celebrate la Fête de la Musique with spontaneous jam sessions and planned performances on street corners and in parks and buildings or wherever the mood hits the musician. It’s great fun. There’s something for every musical taste and it’s a day not to miss. What better way to welcome the Summer Solstice?

228818_36782b98eb4e06a6697abcead2e51ad5fd616e0eA free concert set up on the Promenade des Anglais kicked things off this evening and when we wandered through the crowd of tens of thousands on the way home from dinner, the party was on! Massive speakers and screens ensured everyone had a view. The weather was perfect and the mood was relaxed and happy … what a pleasure to be part of it! As the French do so well, the evening ended with spectacular fireworks.

Everything we did today was within a walking distance of half an hour. Is it any wonder we love this town? How did you welcome the longest day of the year?

Bon weekend et bonne fête des pères/happy father’s day to all of the dedicated dads who love and support their children each day.

This was the poster in the window of the chocolatier around the corner … I could’t resist it. (And, yes, we did go in and buy some chocolate!) Hug your father a little longer today, thank him for all he does … and then share some chocolate! For those of us whose fathers are warm memories, pick some special moments to treasure today.

If this day doesn’t hold good memories for you, I hope you find other reasons to celebrate and that you can “count your life by smiles, not tears”. Thank you, John Lennon.

Some Friday Fantasy

May 23, 2015 by Patricia Sands

If it’s Friday it must be France …

Writing deadlines trump blog posts. I’m in the final stretch of completing Book #3  of my Love In Provence series.  (Title vote coming soon, dear newsletter subscribers …) Every minute possible at the moment is devoted to reaching that light at the end of the tunnel. I can see it! *waving*

Soon, the manuscript will be in the hands of my enthusiastic and supportive Lake Union Publishing editor, Danielle Marshall. I love the editing process and am excited to dive in.

But I also love doing my Friday in France posts and don’t want to miss sharing this. So here’s a quickie that is mostly photographs. I’ll elaborate another day on the beautifully elegant Le Train Bleu in Paris. There are a lot of intriguing stories … as you might imagine! (Think Coco Chanel, Brigitte Bardot, Jean Cocteau, Colette, Marcel Pagnol, for starters.)

Initially called “Buffet de la Gare de Lyon”, it was renamed “Le Train Bleu” in 1963, after the famous train of the same name.

Pour yourself a coffee, tea, glass of wine … and come along. I hope you enjoy this visit.  Have you been? The meals are exquisite but simply stopping in for your beverage of choice is well worth the experience.

First, go to the Gare de Lyon. It’s easy to reach by the Metro system.

Walk to the very front of the station … then look up above the trains … and voilà … since 1901.

Climb the elegant staircase …

Walk through the door and enter a time gone by …

In The Promise of Provence, Katherine rushed to see this iconic restaurant on her visit to Paris. It was high on the “must visit” list Philippe had put together for her.

Ever since writing that scene I’ve been obsessed IMG_0036with returning there (after more years than I care to say out loud … yikes!). I’m pretty sure that first time my travel buddy and I snuck in for a peek … those were the days we traveled with Europe on $5 A Day as our bible.

So three weeks ago, my husband and I had a delicious lunch at Le Train Bleu … joined, quite coincidentally, by our friend Carol Perehudoff, the fabulous travel blogger. Click right here to follow her hilarious and informative posts on Wandering Carol as she explores the world. She’s rated in the Top Ten luxury travel bloggers by USA Today and deservedly so.

How Carol and I discovered we were in Paris at the same time with reservations at Le Train Bleu for the same day is a story for another day.

Have you ever visited Le Train Bleu? I would love to hear about it!

Bon weekend!

I just discovered this postcard ~ what fun to see the restaurant truly has retained the original atmosphere.

Weekly Photo Challenge: INTRICATE

May 3, 2015 by Patricia Sands

This week’s photo challenge topic brought an immediate Alhambra moment to my mind, before I saw the fabulous collection of shots from there on the Daily Post Photo Challenge site. Be sure to pop over and enjoy them.

I’m willing to bet that anyone who has had the pleasure of visiting Granada, Spain, has toured this spectacular historic 11thC Moorish marvel. I would also bet it’s likely that the word “intricate” would be associated by most to the visuals that arrest and capture the eye immediately upon entering the grounds. In the gardens or within the structures of the Alhambra, intricacy abounds.

One of the reasons I enjoy photo challenges so much, is because they cause me to spend time lingering in my albums. Pulling out these photos caused me to look at some other images I had captured during the same trip to Spain. I can’t wait to get back there in September! Hola, Ofra! 🙂

I’m hooked on rooftops wherever I go … as you’ve no doubt noticed, if you follow my travels. This shot from my sister-in-law’s rooftop terrace in her Lecrin Valley village (not far from Granada) is a favourite of mine. The more my eye wandered across the rooftops to the landscape in the background, the more the intricacies of the scene called out to me.

IMG_3092

What do you think?

And then I thought about the dessert I was served the other evening. That was kind of intricate too … and delicious! I’m blaming the soft focus on the wine … that was delicious too!

IMG_0087

What’s your interpretation of “intricate”?

Relax for a while at the Daily Post site and stop by some of the other participating blogs to see an incredible selection of intricate images!
