Together women and girls throughout the world never stop in their efforts to bring about change, equality and a more productive life to everyone. History shows that the more successful women are, the better life is for their families and everyone in their sphere.

As individuals, we can all take steps in our daily lives to positively impact women’s advancement.

We can call out stereotypes, challenge discrimination, question bias, celebrate women’s success, and so much more. Additionally, sharing our knowledge and encouragement with others is key.

Impactful organizations and groups across the world deliver an array of effective strategies, resources, and activity that help #AccelerateAction in many areas including:

forging women’s economic empowerment
recruiting, retaining and developing diverse talent
supporting women and girls into leadership, decision-making, business and STEM
designing and building infrastructure meeting the needs of women and girls
helping women and girls make informed decisions about their health
involving women and girls in sustainable agriculture and food security
providing women and girls with access to quality education and training
elevating women and girl’s participation and achievement in sport
promoting creative and artistic talent of women and girls
addressing further areas supporting the advancement of women and girls

International Women’s Day 2021

March 8, is globally recognized as International Women’s Day. This year’s theme #ChooseToChallenge. Click here for the official United Nations website with more history and information.

This day means different things to different people. For some it’s a celebration, for others it’s a call to action to accelerate gender parity, and for many it’s an opportunity to align and promote relevant activity. Whatever your objective, International Women’s Day is the perfect moment for gender-focused action.

Leaders across the world are pledging to take action as champions of gender parity. 

Today I would like to share part of a previous post of mine and honour a dear departed friend whose legacy will endure. One piece of it is this outstanding collection of photographs of women around the world, compiled by Toronto’s own JourneyWoman, Evelyn Hannon. This is a stunning celebration of women uniquely contributing to their communities.

 Evelyn shared her thoughts on the project at the time:  “As I add the finishing touches to our ‘2016 Journeywoman International Woman’s Day Photography Exhibit,’ I dedicate this year’s compilation to all daughters and granddaughters wherever they live in this great big world. My hope is that with time this young generation of females will bring us closer to a place of equal opportunity for women and for men. As Mothers, Aunts, and Grandmothers we believe in them and will do everything we can to support them.”

Evelyn’s decades of groundbreaking work are being carried on today by others and you can continue to follow Journeywoman on Facebook.

In this photo collection, each is a study in itself, but was there one in particular that stood out for you?

BEAUTY OF A WOMAN 2014~Hear us ROAR!

It’s that time of year again! The fabulous August McLaughlin, had an idea three years ago that continues to blossom … just like a woman! It’s the Beauty of a Woman BlogFest. Everyone who joins in the celebration, blogs on the same day about aspects of beauty we women share. All the links are on August’s blog so click here to get right on over and check them out. Let’s face it, you have to be old to get there! Last year I shared a treasured book, She Walks In Beauty, and Lord Byron’s exquisite poem. When I considered how I would celebrate this year’s theme, a very familiar song kept playing in my mind. I had turned 30 the year this hit the charts and, as Bob Dylan sang, “the times they were a-changing”. They had been for a decade. So let me take you back to 1975. (I know, I know … a lot of you weren’t even born then!) helen-sizedThe United Nations had declared it to be InternationaL Women’s Year (IWY)  with Helen Reddy‘s song, I Am Woman, as the theme. This was an empowering time for women with Gloria Steinem, Betty Frieden and other groundbreakers leading the way. Women’s liberation was a hot topic as feminists spoke out, demonstrated and lobbied governments. In the United States, the focus was on the success of the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment, state by state. It’s hard to believe that to this very day it still has not been ratified!  Visit this site for the complete history and advice as to how you can add your voice to this cause. Every year since 1975, March 8th has been recognized as International Women’s Day. Have you marked it on your calendar? I discovered that today, at age 73, Helen Reddy continues to exemplify the beauty of a woman. Please take seven minutes and 14 seconds to watch this video. Erm … update … I had lunch with my friend Evelyn Hannon today (she’s the fabulousJourneywoman and you should subscribe to her newsletter … okay, that’s another story )… anyway, she told me that coincidentally she had also been talking about I Am Woman and someone told her Helen was performing in Las Vegas this month! I just checked it out and sure enough … see here. I guess they made her an offer she couldn’t refuse and she decided to take a break from her quiet life, after all. Choices, people, that’s what it’s all about! Here are the lyrics, in case you get the urge to sing along! The meaning is every bit as strong today as it was 40 years ago.
