Feeling nostalgic …

August 15, 2015 by Patricia Sands

If it’s Friday, it must be France …

IMG_6822

In preparation for Amazon’s October relaunch of my first two Love in Provence series novels, I’ve been writing blog posts and reminiscing about how my love affair with France evolved.

The summer of 1967, was a special time to be young and in Europe. (Note to self: dig out some of those old photos and slides.) I often smile at the irony that today I write novels set in Antibes when that area was where we stayed (camping or in youth hostels) for a while back in the day. Who knew?

To the beat of an endless soundtrack fromcanstockphoto5613397 the Beatles, the Stones, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd, Cream and the Doors, to name just a few, and fuelled by the writing of Jack Kerouac and the Beat Generation, hordes of young people began to travel to western Europe in the 1960’s. Just out of school, we wanted to see what we had been missing. Today, travel is far more expansive but this was where the first doors opened for the average voyager.

My best friend and I stopped off at the Montreal World’s Fair, Expo ’67, and then ventured off to Europe,  Eurail passes guaranteeing our transportation: a rite of passage for many Canadians in those days. After spending a few months working in England, we crossed the channel by ferry to Amsterdam . We met up with other friends for a while and set off in our rented Volkswagen to explore our way through France to the Costa Del Sol in Spain before circling back through the south of France (where my addiction began), over the Italian and Swiss Alps to Germany. What a time we had!

IMG_8212

It seems to me I was smitten from the moment we first crossed the border into France. Those crossings were a major event entering every European country in those days. English was not as widely spoken, the currency was completely different and it could often be a slow process.

With frayed copies of A Moveable Feast and Tender Is The Night in hand, we followed (or stumbled … being good Canadian girls, now 21 years old ~ drinking was legal! ) in the footsteps of Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Pound, Stein, and others of the so-called Lost Generation of 1920’s Paris.

europe5dollars1Affordable airfare from North America was now available and we were guided by Frommer’s Europe On $5.00 A Day (crazy as it sounds today!). Seriously! Read this article on Independent Traveler.com and see for yourself. Their post brought back a truckload of memories! Suddenly the dream of overseas travel was possible for a younger generation.

In those days E5D, as it became known, was the bestselling travel guide on the planet. It wasn’t until 1972, that Frommer re-issued the book as Europe On $10.00 A Day. In 2004, the title was up to $85.00 a day. I’m not even going to guess what the title would be in 2016 … my bank account cringes … but on we go …

That’s one reason I’m such a supporter of home exchange, which can often make a big difference to the budget and is a wonderful opportunity to ‘live like a local’. Click here to read an interview with me about exchanging and also find links to the sites my husband and I use. Don’t hesitate to contact me if you have questions. I loooove to share information about this great way to travel.

The good news today is that people are able to visit all over the planet, by virtual means, with excellent documentaries and travel shows on pretty much every destination imaginable. So even if we can’t leave home, we can enjoy many aspects of travel and see the world.

IMG_4893

If anything, I’m even more enamoured with life in France today. Although I’ve been fortunate to visit many other countries through the ensuing decades, and experience the excitement and pleasure of their history, culture, cuisine and photo ops (as you know, I’m an incurable shutterbug), France holds the key to my heart.

IMG_5755

Call me crazy, but sometimes I feel as though I lived there in another life. There’s just a feeling deep within … Has that ever happened to you?

There’s still so much of this diversely beautiful country to discover. However, no matter what new region we visit, we always settle for an extended time in the51zczYhL+6L._SX279_BO1,204,203,200_ Côte d’Azur. Alternating between Nice and Antibes, it’s difficult to adequately put into words the allure for us of this coastal area and the villages that dot the hillsides beyond.

At the same time, no stay in the south is complete without a foray into the more pastoral areas of the Var and Luberon, all easy drives from the coast.

Sometimes I still buy a Frommer’s guide, but more often these days I turn to Rick Steves’ guides that can be downloaded and carried with you on your tablet or phone. Google maps and a good GPS help keep us on track … although getting lost often adds to the adventure and ends up with memorable surprises.

The times they are a’changin’. But one thing that hopefully will never change, is the lasting beauty of so many places we love to visit. I’m thankful for every opportunity to travel … and for digital photography!

I love sharing photos and seeing those that others have taken. It’s one reason why I am in love with Instagram! If you haven’t tried that free app yet, I recommend it. It’s so much fun! There’s every imaginable type of photography shared and some of the travel contributors are beyond amazing. Join me @patricialsands, if you are there or check out my Instagram page here on my website.

Doors may not change but locks tell a story.

Do you use guidebooks when you travel? Are they print or downloads? Did you begin your wandering ways when you were younger or are you new to travel adventures?  Often some of the most beautiful places are right around the corner from home or just down the road. Where are you going next?

Bon weekend, everyone!

New release from Sheryl Browne

August 13, 2015 by Patricia Sands

UK author Sheryl Browne is here to tell us about her engaging new romanticsheryl-and-dogs-2 page turner, The Rest Of My Life. But first let’s learn a little about fun and sassy Sheryl.

In her words:

“I’m also a foster parent to disabled dogs, one or two of whom have featured in my books. You can find out more about my dogs, including my Pets as Therapy dog, who was rather unique, on my ‘Furry Friends‘ page.

screen-shot-2013-09-12-at-8-04-31-pmI live in Droitwich in Worcestershire, with my son and partner and my odd dogs, and when I’m not passed out in front of my PC, I can be found messing about on the water in our little narrowboat, Aquaduck, which  I fall off, frequently, me being me.”

Are we tempted?

Adam

Just a little bit?

The Rest of My Life

“You can’t run away from commitment forever … “

Adam Hamilton-Shaw has more reason than most to avoid commitment. Living on a houseboat in the Severn Valley, his dream is to sail into the sunset – preferably with a woman waiting in every port. But lately, his life looks more like a road to destruction than an idyllic boat ride…

Would-be screenplay writer Sienna Meadows realises that everything about Adam spells trouble – but she can’t ignore the feeling that there is more to him than just his bad reputation. Nor can she ignore the intense physical attraction that exists between them.

And it just so happens that Adam sees Sienna as the kind of woman he could commit to. But can he change his damaging behaviour – or is the road to destruction a one-way street?

Marvellous Madeleine

August 7, 2015 by Patricia Sands

If it’s Friday it must be France …

Madeleines have been on my mind quite a bit recently. In my latest novel, I Promise You This (Book 3 of the Love In Provence series), the character Simone Garnier has quite a connection to them. I couldn’t resist the urge to enjoy more than I should have … um, a few … while I was writing.

These classic, tiny perfect French butter cakes make my heart beat a little faster when I savour one (or two or three) straight off the cooling rack!

Often thought of as cookies by North Americans, madeleines are a delicious accompaniment to your favourite cuppa … whether it’s tea or java or simply a nice cold glass of milk. They even have a classy literary history as Marcel Proust‘s muse in his famous epic 7-v0lume À La Recherche du Temps Perdu (Remembrance of Things Past).  Although they sound a little finicky to make, let me just say this: our granddaughter Meg made them when she was 13, on one of our cookie baking days. They tasted divine! Click here for the recipe.

I guess I should add that many Starbucks cafés often sell them  … just not straight out of the oven!

Speaking of I Promise You This, I’m busy working on edits with Danielle Marshall, my awesome Lake Union editor. We also have just seen the first draft of the cover art, which I loved!

Lake Union Publishing will relaunch The Promise of Provence and Promises To Keep in early October. Here are the revised covers which have a beautiful matte finish. I Promise You This will follow in 2016.

You may              want to munch on a madeleine or two while you are reading. Do you get hungry while you read? Here’s a list of the best and worst choices to snack on while reading, in case you’re searching for some advice on the subject.

Bon weekend everyone!

’Til death,

Do us part.

Chapter 1

“Nurse!” I screamed. “Nurse, come back!” Robert’s smile vanished. He advanced and tossed the three orchids onto the foot of my bed.

I twisted around grasping for the cord with the call button. “Get away from me!” I hit the button frantically.

Robert lunged at me. “No, Andrea. Don’t!” He ripped the cord away from me. I pulled my fist back to punch him, but he was quick and caught my wrist in an iron grip. His eyes narrowed into slits.

“Nurse!” I yelled again. He clamped a hand over my mouth. Flashbacks of what that hard hand had done to me went through my mind. I bit down on his fingers, my terror lending me extra strength.

“Arrrgh! You bitch!” Robert’s eyes grew wide. He stared at me with a glassy look that I remembered too well. He drew his arm across his chest to backhand me, but dropped it when the nurse appeared.

“What’s going on here?” the nurse demanded. Margaret was a hefty woman. She filled most of the doorway as she stood with her hands on her hips. “Sir! Come away from the bed.”

“She bit me!” he said, unable to keep the whine out of his voice. “I brought her flowers—orchids, her favourite kind—and she bit me!”

I gasped at his outrageous boldfaced ploy, twisting the truth. “He tried to kill me. Don’t let him near me. He’s the one I told you about.”

“Now, Andrea.” Robert’s voice, silky smooth, sent ripples of terror up my spine. “You know that’s not true.” He turned to the nurse and slowly shook his head. “I’m her husband. You see, she’s had quite a shock. We had an argument and she set fire to our cabin and ran away when she thought I had died in the fire. I guess she’s surprised to see that I’m still alive.”

The nerve of him! I tried to get out of bed. “No! No-no-no!” I had to get the nurse to believe me. “He’s twisting it all around. He tried to kill me.”

The nurse was quick to put her hand out. “Stay in bed, Andrea.” She looked flustered and tried to calm us both. But no wonder she was confused. The whole situation was so bizarre. She looked from Robert to me and back to Robert again.

Would she side with Robert?

“Sir,” she said, “would you mind going to the waiting room down the hall? I’m sure the RCMP would like to speak with you, too. They’ll be here soon to interview Andrea.”

Robert raised his chin and gave me a smirk. “That was fast,” he said. “We’ll soon get to the bottom of the situation then.”

The nurse escorted him out the door. “We called them this morning when she woke up,” I heard her say as they walked down the hall.

The nurse had explained to me earlier that the police have to make a report in cases where there has been violence, especially since a gun was found in my fanny pack. The gun I pointed at him last week. Should have pulled the damn trigger.
