Happy New Year ~ 2017 ~ Bonne Année

January 1, 2017 by Patricia Sands

Each New Year brings with it fresh hope and gives us renewed confidence and courage to make life the best it can be. Remember to laugh well every day … please!

2017 has arrived  filled with opportunities and promise. Our thoughts are also never far from those who face challenges unimaginable to most of us.

My resolution is to hold dear the good memories of years past, learn from loss and mistakes, and move forward … the eternal optimist! May we never stop hoping that one of these days people everywhere will live with the peace and respect we all deserve. Let’s keep working in our own little corners of the world to help make this happen.

Thank you to everyone who helped to make 2016 such a fulfilling year in my writing world. The best part of writing is hearing from readers and it’s a pleasure to connect with so many of you through social media, your reviews and emails. You make it possible for me to do what I love and I’m immensely grateful.

The first draft of my next novel is going to my Lake Union editor next week … if I can get myself to stop ‘tweaking’ ! I swear that’s one of the most difficult things about writing. It’s so hard to stop!

Once I hit that ‘send’ key, I’m giving myself the gift of time every day for the next few weeks to read books that are stacked (virtually, thank goodness) in my TBR pile! Can’t wait! Let me know if there’s a book title you would like to share. We can never have enough!

My ongoing New Year’s wish for each of us remains this:

225391156320705857_f4fpjwu6_c

This Irish blessing says it all:

May love and laughter light your days,
and warm your heart and home.
May good and faithful friends be yours,
wherever you may roam.
May peace and plenty bless your world
with joy that long endures.
May all life’s passing seasons
bring the best to you and yours!

Happy New Year!

A cocktail conversation

October 7, 2016 by Patricia Sands

If it’s Friday, it must be France …

This week I’m having a lovely blog visit over on the website of my dear friend, Bette Lee Crosby, known to readers the world over for her popular women’s fiction novels. Every so often she invites an author to sip a cocktail or two with her. I hope you’ll have time to sit back and join us. We’ll be chatting about France and wishing we could pour a glass of champagne for you too!

Cocktail Conversations – Patricia Sands

My readers are in for a delicious treat because today’s guest is my friend and fellow author Patricia Sands. In case you haven’t yet met Patricia, you are missing out on some wonderful stories. It was Patricia’s novel “The Promise of Provence” that inspired me to do a home exchange and spend three wonderful weeks in Paris. When it comes to Women’s Fiction, her books are always at the top of my list.

Patricia is a world traveler, who spends her summers in France, soaking up the culture and snapping breathtakingly beautiful pictures. She then translates the things she has seen and done into stories that make readers feel they have journeyed along. Today we will talk about her Love in Provence Series and perhaps learn a bit about the new series she’s is currently working on.

150626-263-Edit-print-CarmenBlike

So pull up a virtual chair and join in as Patricia and I begin our celebration of all things French with a Kir Royale. We’ll start with what is on the table…French cuisine, of course. Patricia has made foie gras on thin slices of toasted baguette. (Yes, we will include recipes for both the food and drink)

Foie gras on toast for cocktail hour
1 6-ounce (180 g.) jar or tin of foie gras entier
1/2 loaf of white bread, preferably a baguette
2-3 tbsp. fruit preserves
sprig of fresh basil or mint leaves for garnish
a chilled bottle of Champagne or a top-quality sweet white wine like Monbazillac or Sauternes

Patricia: ~Pours crème de cassis in the bottom half of flute glasses~ I thought this would be the perfect drink for today because as you know the French love champagne. This berry liqueur is the perfect addition for a special celebration!

Bette: ~pops cork on champagne bottle~ I am delighted to have you here today, and super excited to have my followers learn more about your Love in Provence Series ~Fills the remainder of the glass with champagne~ Something I think many people don’t realize is that the series started with “The Promise of Provence” which was originally written as a stand alone novel. Can you share why you decided to turn it into a series?

Patricia: Bette, it was a surprise to me! I received so many requests from readers to continue the story I realized I wanted to know what happened too! It was very satisfying for me to keep developing Kat’s story and pull it all together in Book 3, I Promise You This.

Bette: ~Sips Kir Royale~ I’m glad you suggested this drink; it’s absolutely delicious. Even more festive than champagne, if such a thing is possible.
kir-royale
Patricia: ~Smiles and passes plate of foie gras appetizers~ The French see food and wine as an art, not a necessity, which is one of the reasons I’ve fallen in love with the country. I especially love the market squares with their fresh vegetables and lovely flowers.

Bette: Going back to the Promise of Provence. It is such a tribute to your writing skills to have readers fall in love with the characters and want more. When you created Katherine and Philippe were they based on any person in particular?

Patricia: Katherine stepped out of my imagination, but I love how I happened upon the character of Philippe. I was standing in the daily market in Antibes (a truly wonderful market!) waiting to buy some cheese. I watched the fromager speaking with a customer about a sample of cheese he was holding on a paper on his hand. He was SO passionate and emotional about it that I fell in love with him right there and knew Katherine had to do the same.
I got to know him and met with him several times early in the morning before the market opened so he could answer questions for me about cheese and how one goes about becoming a fromager. It was a real education for me … and a delicious one!

Bette: I know the Love in Provence is a trilogy, but I hate the thought of Katherine and Philippe not returning; will they be included in any other books you have planned?

Patricia: I receive emails from readers almost every day asking me to keep telling Kat’s story and it would be my pleasure to do so. I’m working on a stand alone novel now that is set in a different part of France. Once that is published I hope to get back to visiting with Kat and Philippe and friends.

Bette: Another thing I love about your books is how vividly you paint a picture of each locale. This past summer I’ve followed your travels through the gorgeous pictures you’ve posted on Facebook, so I have to ask, will those places be used in your new novel?

Patricia: Oh yes indeed and I’m excited about that. We spent two weeks in Arles, and have been there before a couple of times, so I was able to do a lot of research. As you know, I love to take photographs and they are very important to me as I tell a story. Great writing prompts! This novel will be set in and around Arles and also in the very unique Camargue area to the south of the town.

img_3003

Bette: Sounds exciting. Which came first – Did you decide on the locations for the new novel and then book home exchanges in those areas or did you plan the home exchange first and create the story around the location?

Patricia: In this case, the exchange came first. When I realized we were going to spend time in Arles, this story began to develop in my head. It just felt right. As I strolled those ancient streets, I could feel the main character, Arianna, becoming more alive.

Bette: When you are writing a scene, do you take out the pictures you took in that particular location and refer to them for the detail in your description?

img_4010

Patricia: Absolutely! As I mentioned above, the photos remind me of details and also of feelings I had when I was in a certain area. It’s surprising how they can help move a story along by providing a small reminder of something that might have slipped my mind.

Bette: ~Nibbles on foie gras~ I know that sampling different cuisines is part of your travels, do you collect recipes and try to replicate them once you are back home?

Patricia: Well, you are right about the first part of your question, I love to sample different cuisines when we travel. Isn’t this foie gras delicious! I particularly love to put a little fig jelly on it. I do collect and share recipes but would rather write than cook when I am back home! Fortunately I have an understanding husband who tells me I “buy” great dinners. *smile*

Actually, I love photographing the food at French markets. For example, don’t you think these radishes are beautiful? J’adore the way the French like to serve them simply with softened butter and fleur de sel, the caviar of sea salt! Just dip them lightly and enjoy the crunch! Having a fresh baguette to accompany this can turn it into a nice addition to lunch.

img_2565

Bette: Now for some of the fun stuff that readers love to hear, can you share a secret tidbit about yourself and your interests?

Patricia: Well, this isn’t really a secret … but it’s one of the things I love best aboutimg_3804 life. We have six grandchildren, ranging in age from seven to (yikes!) twenty-one. I love sharing our travels with them. The young ones love to visit us in Florida. This year our teenage granddaughters came to France on their own for a week with us. This selfie is one of my favourite photos of the summer as we took the girls to the places we love.
img_4083Our older granddaughter spent a week with us later when she was traveling after graduation as a registered nurse. It was a delight to have her in Antibes with us for my birthday.

Bette: And how about upcoming trips? Are you already planning your home exchanges for next year and will they be a tie-in to another new book?

Patricia: Of course we will be back in France next year. For part of that time I will be leading another women’s tour based on my Love In Provence books. I’ve done two tours in the past and they were great fun. Most of the women had read my books and were eager to see the places I wrote about. We take 16 women and spend 6 days in Nice and 6 in Avignon. Then we do day trips to Antibes and all the other lovely villages in the stories. It’s great fun getting to know readers personally too. I believe there are two spots left if any of your lovely readers would like to come! The information is on the Travel page on my website and we’re going from June 6 to 18. I can’t wait!

img_4195

Bette: Oh how I wish I could get away and join you, but the timing is no good for me. Readers – I would urge you that if you have ever wanted to explore France, do it on one of Patricia’s tours. They are wonderful and you’ll see the real France, the one the tourists so often miss. Patricia is the person who encouraged me to try a Home Exchange and spend some time in Paris. She said I’d love it, and she was absolutely right.

Time flies when you’re spending it with friends and while our time with Patricia has come to an end for today, you can keep up with her adventures by following along on her blog and newsletter. I do and it is always fun to find one of her lovely newsletters in my in box.

I just had to do it …

August 22, 2016 by Patricia Sands

I know I’m taking the easy way out here but … I just had to do it! I have so much to share with you after our two months in Europe and just not enough time. Writing another novel seems to be eating those hours up in a hurry!

So I’m reposting my last newsletter here and I hope you enjoy it. If you are already a subscriber, please forgive me … and I hope you’ll be happy taking a peek at it again … My next one should be out in a week or so.

Newsletter #35                                                                       July 24, 2016

Bonjour mes amis

I’m writing to you on a beautiful calm, south of France kind of day and I hope you are enjoying a similarly peaceful day, wherever you are.

This header photo above is actually the front entrance to the exchange house we are enjoying in Antibes. Honestly, just opening the gate and seeing that front door when we come home each day is a calming factor in itself!

And there’s a resident tortoise in the garden that I have been asked to leave some lettuce and fruit for every morning. His name is Geoff!

A big MERCI to everyone who joined me and my seven other author friends for our Facebook book event on July 12th. We had a record attendance and it was great fun!

Here’s what I’ve been up to since my last letter.

Our two-week stay in Arles, just after my last newsletter, meant I was able to do a lot of research and planning for my current manuscript. It’s such an intriguing town with its Roman history so alive throughout with monuments and sites that are amazingly intact … after 2000 years.

I shared a lot of information and photos about Arles in my last newsletter and in this post on my blog last month.

One of the first things we did was get right over to the Fondation Vincent Van Gogh to see a current exhibit of 31 original paintings by the master. It’s on until September, if you are in the area.

A thrill was visiting the Antiquities Museum where a complete Roman transport boat is displayed. It was recovered from the sandy bottom of the Rhône river, that runs by Arles, in 2014. The story of how they managed to recover and preserve the boat is quite remarkable. The danger was that the disintegration of the wood could begin immediately once it was exposed to the air. Here’s a brief video about it.

I was fortunate to spend a day in the Camargue area just south of Arles: a unique, marshy triangular river delta, famous for its white horses, black bulls and pink flamingoes. The remarkable Aigues-Mortes, a medieval walled town is also located there. Have you ever been there?

Part of my next novel is set in this area and it was wonderful to have someone tour me around who is very familiar with the history.

Next, we spent three days in charming Saint-Remy-de-Provence at the delightful Maison-de-Line B&B (within easy walking distance of the old town). I was excited to take my husband to Les Carrières de Lumières near Les Baux. Chagall’s work is featured this year. If you are visiting the area, be sure to take this in!

Before leaving for the coast, I also was fortunate to spend some special days in new (to me) towns. One day Carolyne Kauser-Abbott, founder of Perfectly Provence, toured me around the captivating village of Eygalières. And … bonus … it was market day!
Carolyne introduced me to a talented young woman who creates these gorgeous lavender fuseaux (wands) in the traditional way taught to her by her grandmère. I was glad to know that Carolyne features them for sale in her Atelier on Perfectly Provence. I couldn’t resist and bought three at the market!

On another bright, sunny day, I took a bus from Arles to Uzés where Deborah Bine, The Barefoot Blogger, gave me an insider’s tour. It was so much fun to meet her in person and last week she came to Antibes so I could return the favour.

After all of the terrible events happening around the globe, I feel even more committed to continue writing stories that somehow carry us all away to happier places. In fact, those events compelled me to focus even more on the positive in the manuscript I’m currently working on. Now if I could just stop being distracted by the beauty around me at the moment, I might make more progress!

As always, I am in my happiest place when settled on the Côte d’Azur … and particularly in Antibes, surrounded by the images from my Love In Provence novels. This year we are in the Juan-les-Pins side of Antibes and tonight we’re going for dinner at the Hôtel Belles-Rives. Kat and Molly spent an evening there with Nick and Graham in The Promise of Provence. I have a feeling I may sense their presence.

Click here to read the past and current history of the hotel.

Even more so, I hope to feel the spirits of F. Scott Fitzgerald and his wife, Zelda … well, maybe not Zelda who was basically having a breakdown during that time. They lived here when it was the private Villa St. Louis in 1925/26.  It was on this property that he pennedTender is the Night, as well as working on aspects of other stories.

In a letter to Hemingway, Fitzgerald wrote, ““With our being back in a nice villa on my beloved Riviera (between Nice and Cannes) I’m happier than I’ve been for years. It’s one of those strange, precious and all too transitory moments when everything in one’s life seems to be going well.”

It’s a pity the rest of his life did not play out that way, but he certainly left the world some excellent novels.

Our teenage granddaughters came from Toronto to spend last week with us. What a joy that was! We loved sharing travels with our children in years past and to have that opportunity with this next generation was special indeed. Have you travelled with grandchildren? I heartily recommend it!

With just a week to take them to some of the places we love, we managed to accomplish a lot and the girls were fabulous company. They also took the best selfies!

More good news for us is that our oldest granddaughter, newly graduated from university as a registered nurse, is arriving here this afternoon. I’m going to hop on the train to Cannes (just two stops) to meet her at the bus station where she is arriving from Barcelona.

I better finish up this letter and spend the next few hours writing!

Here are the winners of Sally Christie’s latest release, our June giveaway:

Congratulations! I’m sure you have already heard from Sally.

This month’s giveaway will be for a gift box of goodies I have been collecting from the French markets I visit on a regular basis. The value of the contents this year will be around $50.00 and they will be items such as French soap, lavender, sea salt, tea towel and other things I can’t resist.

If you would like to enter, you know the drill ~  simply send an email topatriciasandsauthor@gmail.com and tell us if you are taking a summer holiday or enjoying a ‘staycation’ at home. We always like to hear what you are up to!

As I’ve been choosing photos for this letter, I realized I have so much more to share with you. Instead of bombarding you with mail, I’ll be writing blog posts about the beautiful places we visited. I you would like to see more, just check on my blog every week. If you care to subscribe to it, you’ll automatically know when a new post is written.

My recipe this month is for the classic French sandwich, le croque-monsieur i.e. the French version of a grilled cheese. Every once in a while, it’s a must to eat one!

Stay well, my friends, be kind to one another, read a lot and appreciate every single day. Profitez de tous les jours! I’m reminded on a regular basis that the best part of being an author is hearing from readers. I value the messages I receive from you. Thanks also for sharing my books with your friends and for the reviews you write. It’s all most appreciated and inspiring. See you next month!

Rosemont, Downtown Abbey ~ Barbara Hinske shares her news

August 13, 2016 by Patricia Sands

This week it’s a pleasure to have Barbara HinskeScreen shot 2013-02-21 at 7.23.18 PM drop by the blog.  For those of you who are meeting Barb for the first time, she is an attorney by day; novelist by night … in fact, an Amazon and BookBub bestselling author, to boot! Barb inherited the writing gene from her father who wrote mysteries when he retired and told her a story every night of her childhood.

When I first met Barb, I was immediately interested to discover she was an avid Downtown Abbey fan who posted weekly on her website about it. I couldn’t wait to talk to her about it.

Join me!

PS ~ Let’s get the ball rolling by talking about Downtown Abbey! One of my favourite topics! It was great fun to follow your reviews, teasers, and posts while the series was in progress. Are you going to leave all of that on your website so fans can continue to enjoy it, even though the series is over … *stifling a sob*

BH ~ I’m still in mourning over this, too! At least it looks like there will be a DA movie. I’m definitely going to leave the reviews and posts on my website. Many of us will turn to our DVDs for a bit of binge watching and I know people will continue to enjoy the posts. Writing those reviews opened up the UK market for me and I’ve made some lovely friends “across the pond”. I want to keep that going.

PS ~ And now you are giving the same glorious coverage to Home Fires. How do you feel it compares to DA?

BH ~ I’ve adored Home Fires. While it lacks the spectacular settings and clothes of DA, it’s similar to DA in that it features a superb ensemble cast of characters that you come to know and care about. I love the connections of the women that are at the core of the story. The writing is brilliant. iTV cancelled the show at the end of the second season, leaving us to cope with a cliff hanger. There’s been a tremendous outpouring of support for the show but no one else has picked it up (yet). It’s a two-season gem of a show.

PS ~ You’re a busy woman with full-time careers as an attorney and a prolific writer. How do you manage to balance your time and interests?

51ZJU1Onr4L._SY346_BH ~ My children are grown, so I’ve now got my evenings and weekends to spend on my writing. I’m blessed with an amazing amount of energy and (like my mother) don’t need more than 5 hours of sleep. I wake up very early and spend an hour or so writing or working on the business aspects of being an author (publishing, marketing, etc) before I go to work. I’m too tired after work to write, so I answer emails and post to social media. I do most of my writing on the weekends. I’m a fast writer and can turn out 4000 words each day. My all-time high was 9000 words (that was a very long day).

PS ~ You’ve made very good use of YouTube videos and have been extremely innovative in having a prelude composed specifically for your Rosemont series. Please tell us how you became interested in this particular aspect of book marketing.

BH ~ I try to keep myself informed of the current trends in marketing and YouTube’s popularity has skyrocketed. My house is the perfect backdrop for videos. I’m the nosiest person on the planet and I always love seeing other people’s homes, so I thought my readers would be curious about my old house.

PS ~ Your home in Phoenix is beautiful and, as you mention, the model for your Rosemont series. How long have you lived there and was owning and maintaining a stately home always a dream of yours?

BH ~ My husband and I bought our home in 2010, right before we got married and combined households. We got married at the base of the staircase and I swept down the stairs on my son’s arm.

Our home is a stately historic home in Phoenix. I lived within walking distance of it and had driven by it for years and loved it. My husband grew up in Phoenix and his family passed it every Sunday after church. His dad always said he’d like to buy the house and fix it up (at that time, it was in sad shape).

We toured the house on the day it went on the market and made an offer the next morning. The house was a short sale and it was vacant, dirty, and dark (the utilities had been turned off). Despite that, we both knew as soon as the mahogany front door closed behind us that we would buy that home. We hadn’t even seen the rest of the house! Our experience inspired a scene at the beginning of Coming to Rosemont. We feel so blessed that we were able to buy this house. The people we bought it from had restored it beautifully and we feel like we are being good stewards of it. We both love to entertain and this house is perfect.

IMG_0355

I feel like our home is almost a living thing. When I bring home a décor item (from a consignment or thrift store – I’m addicted to thrifty shopping), I always tell the house that I’ve bought it a present.

PS ~ That’s a beautiful story in many ways, Barb. It sounds like this house was meant to be your home. What pets do you have at the moment and how are they incorporated into your story-telling?

BH ~ Brian and I are currently servants to a golden retriever named Roman and a terrier/dachshund mix named Abby. I can’t imagine living without a dog or cat and I love writing about them. They bring people such happiness and connect people in delightful ways. I wrote a golden retriever (named Roman) into the Rosemont series. Eve in the Rosemont series is based upon my Jack Russell terrier that went over the rainbow bridge years ago but lives on in my heart.

IMG_0521

PS ~ Would you like to give us a sneak peek at what readers can eagerly anticipate from you?

BH ~ Drawing Close, the fourth novel in the Rosemont series, is now available on Amazon and for Kindle as of August 1. It was my favorite book in the series to write and advance reviews have been very favorable.

I’ve finished a novella titled The Christmas Club and it will be available this holiday season. I’ve got a standalone thriller in outline and I’m working on concepts for a new mystery series.

And I’ve just begun to write the fifth book in the Rosemont series.

That’s a busy schedule! But I know you agree that, as writers, we’re doing work we love. Thanks so much for spending time with us here.
