Rosemont, Downtown Abbey ~ Barbara Hinske shares her news

August 13, 2016 by Patricia Sands

This week it’s a pleasure to have Barbara HinskeScreen shot 2013-02-21 at 7.23.18 PM drop by the blog.  For those of you who are meeting Barb for the first time, she is an attorney by day; novelist by night … in fact, an Amazon and BookBub bestselling author, to boot! Barb inherited the writing gene from her father who wrote mysteries when he retired and told her a story every night of her childhood.

When I first met Barb, I was immediately interested to discover she was an avid Downtown Abbey fan who posted weekly on her website about it. I couldn’t wait to talk to her about it.

Join me!

PS ~ Let’s get the ball rolling by talking about Downtown Abbey! One of my favourite topics! It was great fun to follow your reviews, teasers, and posts while the series was in progress. Are you going to leave all of that on your website so fans can continue to enjoy it, even though the series is over … *stifling a sob*

BH ~ I’m still in mourning over this, too! At least it looks like there will be a DA movie. I’m definitely going to leave the reviews and posts on my website. Many of us will turn to our DVDs for a bit of binge watching and I know people will continue to enjoy the posts. Writing those reviews opened up the UK market for me and I’ve made some lovely friends “across the pond”. I want to keep that going.

PS ~ And now you are giving the same glorious coverage to Home Fires. How do you feel it compares to DA?

BH ~ I’ve adored Home Fires. While it lacks the spectacular settings and clothes of DA, it’s similar to DA in that it features a superb ensemble cast of characters that you come to know and care about. I love the connections of the women that are at the core of the story. The writing is brilliant. iTV cancelled the show at the end of the second season, leaving us to cope with a cliff hanger. There’s been a tremendous outpouring of support for the show but no one else has picked it up (yet). It’s a two-season gem of a show.

PS ~ You’re a busy woman with full-time careers as an attorney and a prolific writer. How do you manage to balance your time and interests?

51ZJU1Onr4L._SY346_BH ~ My children are grown, so I’ve now got my evenings and weekends to spend on my writing. I’m blessed with an amazing amount of energy and (like my mother) don’t need more than 5 hours of sleep. I wake up very early and spend an hour or so writing or working on the business aspects of being an author (publishing, marketing, etc) before I go to work. I’m too tired after work to write, so I answer emails and post to social media. I do most of my writing on the weekends. I’m a fast writer and can turn out 4000 words each day. My all-time high was 9000 words (that was a very long day).

PS ~ You’ve made very good use of YouTube videos and have been extremely innovative in having a prelude composed specifically for your Rosemont series. Please tell us how you became interested in this particular aspect of book marketing.

BH ~ I try to keep myself informed of the current trends in marketing and YouTube’s popularity has skyrocketed. My house is the perfect backdrop for videos. I’m the nosiest person on the planet and I always love seeing other people’s homes, so I thought my readers would be curious about my old house.

PS ~ Your home in Phoenix is beautiful and, as you mention, the model for your Rosemont series. How long have you lived there and was owning and maintaining a stately home always a dream of yours?

BH ~ My husband and I bought our home in 2010, right before we got married and combined households. We got married at the base of the staircase and I swept down the stairs on my son’s arm.

Our home is a stately historic home in Phoenix. I lived within walking distance of it and had driven by it for years and loved it. My husband grew up in Phoenix and his family passed it every Sunday after church. His dad always said he’d like to buy the house and fix it up (at that time, it was in sad shape).

We toured the house on the day it went on the market and made an offer the next morning. The house was a short sale and it was vacant, dirty, and dark (the utilities had been turned off). Despite that, we both knew as soon as the mahogany front door closed behind us that we would buy that home. We hadn’t even seen the rest of the house! Our experience inspired a scene at the beginning of Coming to Rosemont. We feel so blessed that we were able to buy this house. The people we bought it from had restored it beautifully and we feel like we are being good stewards of it. We both love to entertain and this house is perfect.

IMG_0355

I feel like our home is almost a living thing. When I bring home a décor item (from a consignment or thrift store – I’m addicted to thrifty shopping), I always tell the house that I’ve bought it a present.

PS ~ That’s a beautiful story in many ways, Barb. It sounds like this house was meant to be your home. What pets do you have at the moment and how are they incorporated into your story-telling?

BH ~ Brian and I are currently servants to a golden retriever named Roman and a terrier/dachshund mix named Abby. I can’t imagine living without a dog or cat and I love writing about them. They bring people such happiness and connect people in delightful ways. I wrote a golden retriever (named Roman) into the Rosemont series. Eve in the Rosemont series is based upon my Jack Russell terrier that went over the rainbow bridge years ago but lives on in my heart.

IMG_0521

PS ~ Would you like to give us a sneak peek at what readers can eagerly anticipate from you?

BH ~ Drawing Close, the fourth novel in the Rosemont series, is now available on Amazon and for Kindle as of August 1. It was my favorite book in the series to write and advance reviews have been very favorable.

I’ve finished a novella titled The Christmas Club and it will be available this holiday season. I’ve got a standalone thriller in outline and I’m working on concepts for a new mystery series.

And I’ve just begun to write the fifth book in the Rosemont series.

That’s a busy schedule! But I know you agree that, as writers, we’re doing work we love. Thanks so much for spending time with us here.

What’s $.99 among friends?

June 9, 2016 by Patricia Sands

It’s time to celebrate friendship! TBC ~ new coverWell, actually, every day is time to celebrate friendship, isn’t it? We’re so fortunate to have it in our life.

With summer finally here and having just spent time with  my ‘real’ Bridge Club, this felt like a good time to do something special with this book that was my debut novel.

If you haven’t read THE BRIDGE CLUB, now’s your chance to pick up the ebook for $.99.  Send some copies to your friends while you’re at it!

The Bridge Club will be the Book Of The Day on Ereader News Today on Friday, June 10th and the sale will continue for several days thereafter. ENT is a fabulous site to discover ebooks that are free or discounted for a limited time. You might want to subscribe and get the news from them!

576517c4b4c01103a04ba04867f005afHere’s what one Amazon reader had to say about The Bridge Club:  “This book was a wonderful surprise. From the cover I thought it was another fluffy little comedy about a group of zany ladies. Let me assure you it is not – rather it is a guide book for every woman who faces the problems of womanhood as these characters. Yes they are a bit zany, but they define what friendship is all about. They meet each hardship together ,United in their efforts to always be there for one another. While the ending is sad and thought provoking you come away with a sense of joy and peace. Every woman should read this book !!”

Hop on over here to read 100 more reviews on Amazon.

As well as Amazon, The Bridge Club633c6b2eb2442522e39fbe6b6271262d is also available on iTunes , Nook, and Kobo. It was only recently uploaded on the latter three sites, so has no reviews there. If you have time to leave one, I hope you know that’s always appreciated.

If it hadn’t been for the lifetime of friendship I’ve shared with this special group, I might never have begun a career as an author. And they’ve been my biggest cheerleaders from day one … just another reason to add to the many of why I love this collection of smart, sensitive, fun, strong women, who all have their own special stories to tell. But then don’t we all?

Find a few moments in your day to tell the special people in your life how much they mean to you. Celebrate those friendships!

Bette Lee Crosby is in the house!

May 4, 2016 by Patricia Sands

Small head shotI have a treat for you today! USA Today Bestselling and Award-winning novelist Bette Lee Crosby has dropped by to spend some time with us. Bette’s women’s fiction novels are described as ““Well-crafted storytelling populated by memorable characters caught up in equally memorable circumstances.” I love her stories!

One of the nicest women you could ever know,  I first met Bette Lee Crosby a few years ago when I was getting ready to publish my second novel, The Promise of Provence. Bette is a fine story-teller as well as a smart, experienced marketer and she is beyond generous at sharing her knowledge. Besides that, she’s never without that bright smile and her sunny Southern disposition.

One of the best things about being part of the writing community is the opportunity to become friends with someone like Bette. Now here’s a chance for you to get to know her better too:

PS ~ Was it always your desire to be an author or was there one time in your life when you realized this was the path you would take?

BLC ~ Actually I studied to be an artist. My very first job was as a packaging designer – working primarily with soft goods such as pantyhose. I asked one of the salesmen for copy to go on the back on the package and he told me to ‘just make something up’ – I did, and a new career was born. I ultimately went from design into marketing and found I enjoyed writing much more than I did designing.

PS ~ That’s a great story in itself! Do you draw from past experiences in your own life when you develop ideas for your novels?

BLC ~ Often I do. Sometimes my own life, sometimes the lives of friends who so generously share their stories with me. These incidents give me food for thought but I generally end up with a story that is still quite different from what actually happened.

PS ~ Your Memory House series has a clever theme linking each novel. Why do you think readers are so drawn to these stories?

BLC ~ I think most people would like to believe there is a bit of magic to life – things that seem like coincidence, but just might be ordered by someone much higher up than we are. Ophelia Browne of Memory House finds this type of magic in the memories other people leave behind. I have had so many reviewers say, “This makes me wonder if the memories you leave behind actually can be found by someone else…”

PS ~ Do you have a favorite character or particular story that gave you the most pleasure to write?

BLC ~ I have a great fondness for Ethan Allen of Spare Change. He is an eleven-year-old boy modeled after the way I imagined my mom was at that age. She came from a large West Virginia family and had a tough childhood. But she was a survivor who overcame the odds, which is how Ethan Allen deals with the challenges he encounters in the story.

PS ~  Your stories are filled with rich detail, emotion and humor, and such a variety of settings. How do you begin to plan these tales and are you a plotter or a pantser?

BLC ~ This is a question I often ask myself. I have tried both but I guess I have to say the pantser method is more in keeping with my style of writing. On the few times I did do a truly comprehensive outline, the characters drew the story in a totally different direction. The one thing I do before I actually start writing is really get to know my characters. I get inside their head and start to think the way they’d think, then I know when I stumble down the wrong pathway they will let me know quickly enough. When I try to make characters do something that is not of their nature, the action becomes stinted and almost impossible to write.

PS ~  Your special assistant and muse, Sugar, is such a cutie.13102827_10206802488045525_3909355318178293556_n Along with tossing her toys, how do you spend time when you’re not writing?

BLC ~ Reading, laying by the pool and thinking of new stories, dinner dates, movies and occasional dances with hubby, long walks with Sugar, shopping with girlfriends. I spend so much time writing and with all the side jobs that are part and parcel of publishing a book, that I tend to content myself with moments of pleasure whenever there is time. When you love what you do, it’s not the same as really working and with living in Florida it’s like I am always on vacation.

PS ~ Congratulations! The good news is out that you have completed you next novel, The Regrets of Cyrus Dodd. Would you tell us a bit about the story, please?

The Regrets of Cyrus Dodd - Ebook SmallBLC ~ Since I just yesterday finished writing the description for this book, I will include it here. THE REGRETS OF CYRUS DODD…The Wyattsville Series, Book 4 Revenge, death, deception… These are the things Cyrus Dodd has to overcome if he is to give Ruth the life he’s promised her. The problem is he’s got a prideful nature and when a seemingly innocuous argument leads to a bitter feud with his neighbor, his life changes forever. The plans he has fall by the wayside and before he finds a way to fix it, he comes to understand the meaning of regret. In this early twentieth century family saga, two men come up against each other—both are iron-willed and stubborn. One will lose his farm; the other will lose his family. In a tale of betrayal, murder and revenge two West Virginia farmers will discover that being right does not necessarily mean being happy. Believing he has lost everything Cyrus Dodd is forced to start over. He promises Ruth that this time it will be better, but the truth is he doesn’t know if it’s a promise he can keep.

PS ~ Bette, that’s sounds like another fascinating story! I can’t wait to read it!

Thank you for all the wonderful stories you bring to readers around the world. Thanks also for stopping by and visiting here. It’s always a pleasure to spend time with you.

BLC ~ Thank you for having me, Patricia. I always look forward to the times when you are in Florida and we can get together for a face-to-face afternoon. It is so good to share thoughts and ideas about this fun crazy book business.

Ditto, Bette. Every visit with you is sheer pleasure … plus you serve delicious lunches!  Some of the best times are when you host a group of writer/friends during the winter. Everyone has already begun looking forward to the next!

You can connect with Bette at her website, on FaceBook, and her Amazon Author Page.

(Here are a few memories from past good times with … can you spot them (?) … Diane Capri, Jillian Dodd, Christine Nolfi, Karla Darcy, Steena Holmes, Leona DeRosa Bodie, and Bette’s always-a-good-sport husband, Dick.)

Chapter Five by Patricia Sands

Madeline’s vision blurred. Bitter acid constricted her throat, already raw from yelling, as she struggled for breath. The fading light morphed into a black hole, sucking her down.

As he questioned the brunette, Garrett’s eyes turned to Madeline when she moaned. He caught her in his arms as his quick reflexes saved her from toppling into the mud.

Rain pelted down and a cool wind had picked up. Thick, dark clouds obscured the sky completely. Madeline’s shivering body pressed into his soaked ranger’s shirt.

“Is this your tent?” he asked the teenagers.

“Yeah … our parents have an RV back in the lot and we’re hangin’ here. How can we help?” a heavy-set boy, about college age and wearing an gold and green Packers’ hoodie answered. Concern was obvious in his expression and voice, as awareness of the situation became clear. Garrett thought he seemed like a take-charge kind of kid.

“Go get your parents … and hurry!”

Madeline’s deadweight began to ease as he supported her across the slippery patch of grass and mud and into the tent. He was relieved to feel her legs getting stronger as she regained some control of her distraught state.

Motioning with a flick of his head, he barked at the other three rain-soaked youths to follow. Inside, he addressed the brown-haired girl directly in a voice that was now surprisingly calm, but bristled with authority. There was no question the ranger meant business.

“I need to know this … NOW! Which way was the man running? Just tell me that.”

Swallowing hard, the girl blinked. “He ran right past our campfire and into the woods on the trail by the last picnic table.”

“What else? Was he white, brown, black? Clothing? Jacket? Sweater? Did he have hair or was he bald? Tall? Short? Heavy?”

Trembling from cold and nerves, the girl’s face contorted as tears squirted down her cheeks. “He was, like, white and tall … um … no average … well, like, maybe tall … I don’t remember what he was wearing … like, I didn’t really look … I didn’t know anything was wrong!” Choking on her last words, she paused before losing control completely, filling the tent with loud sobs. The boy in the gray fleece put his arm around her.

Garrett pulled a notepad and pen out of his back pocket as he spoke into the two-way radio clipped to his shirt, just below his left shoulder. Talking in abrupt spurts, he made notes at the same time.

“Witness saw man … average to tall … caucasian … running past tents … headed down Pine Needle Path … west end of campsite …crying girl in his arms … girl fits Megan’s description. Break.”

Ranger Judy’s voice crackled back. “Roger. Volunteers spreading through whole area … exit from the parking lot already blocked … two vehicles did exit just before: a green pickup truck and a pink Buick with Mary Kay license plate … State troopers checking highway … roadblocks in place … sending support here … river rescue assembling … Amber Alert issued. Clear.”

“Copy that. Out.” Garrett replied. His jaw tightened as he turned to the girl again. He silently thanked the capable staff in the park, grateful for how they would leap into action. He also knew once the troopers arrived, they would take over command. This had happened on his watch and he wanted to have something to give them. With any luck he would solve this.

“Miss, I’m Chief Ranger Garrett Weston. What’s your name? You need to try and help me. No time to waste.” As young as he looked, there was strength and determination in his eyes, now a steely gray. His squared shoulders and solid stature were reassuring despite the unfolding nightmare.

The teen’s dark complexion was ghostly as she wrung her hands non-stop. A look of horror replaced the confused expression of minutes before. The boy in the gray fleece removed his arm from around her and nudged her toward the ranger.

“I’m Kim … Kimberly … Simpson,” she replied as her knees buckled slightly. She sat on the red mesh campstool Garrett pushed over to her.

The other girl and boy began talking to Madeline. Their faces were pale and serious as she prodded them, through her tears, to recall something. Anything. All she could think of was that Smart girl and the demented couple who had taken her.

Garrett held up a hand to quiet everyone.

Madeline wiped her face with her sleeves and sniffed loudly. These few minutes had been torture. She wanted to run from this overcrowded tent, stuffy and damp as it was becoming. She wanted to rush over to the picnic table and discover Meg had just been playing a silly game of ‘hide on mommy’ like she did at home all the time. She wanted to hug her tightly and hear her daughter’s sweet giggles and laugh with her and kiss her all over. That’s what she wanted.

She stood swiftly and turned to leave. “I’ve got to get back to our tent! Megan might be there now!”

Garrett caught her arm and waved his hand in front of her face to get her to focus. He had seen that frozen expression on a mother before and knew she would slip into shock if he didn’t do something. He squeezed her arm, as he spoke, giving her a slight shake.

“We’ve got someone waiting there, ma’am. We need you here now.” His gaze penetrated her dazed eyes.

Motioning to the young man in the fleece, he asked for a bottle of water from a nearby cooler. “Open the tent flap too. Let’s get some fresh air in here.”

He reached down and pulled over a second campstool, guiding Madeline to sit next to Kimberly.

“Drink the water, Madeline,” he said to her, his voice softer for the moment as he used her name. “You need it.”

With his hand on her shoulder, his eyes swept her face and, in those seconds, he sensed the intensity of the pain overwhelming her fragile beauty, “She definitely is not a Natalie Tucker.”

He put his foot up on another stool. With the notepad on his knee, he wrote Kimberly’s name, asking her age and address as well. Ripping off a page, he passed it to her companions, with a pen and terse instructions to write down their information.

Turning to Kimberly, he asked her to close her eyes for a moment. After that last abduction in the park, Garrett had studied about investigations and interrogating witnesses. He was aware of the difficulties in being an eyewitness. “Our minds are not like video cameras. They can’t just replay what we saw. I know this is difficult. Your mind can play tricks on you. Look deep inside your memory. Do you see anything more clearly now?”

She squeezed her eyes shut. Her lips twitched. “The little girl was holding something very close to her face but I couldn’t tell what it was … like, maybe a doll …”

“I know what it is,” Madeline cut in hoarsely. “Her teddy bear. It’s brown. She never goes anywhere without it.” Her shoulders shook as she buried her face in her hands.

Kimberly’s eyes popped open.

“Oh! Your notepad and pen … please!” Reaching to take them from the ranger’s hands, her request was more like a demand. “I’m an art student. I … I did see something … him…”

Garrett cocked his head and pressed the button to speak into his two-way.

With deft light strokes the teenager began to sketch.
