Love In Provence

July 1st ~ Happy Canada Day

July 1, 2015 by Patricia Sands

How are you celebrating Canada Day? It’s a bit chilly in Toronto today. A sweater is probably a good idea if you’re going to have a barbecue and watch fireworks this evening. I know, eh? Where’s summer?

I’ve just returned from three weeks in the beautiful south of France and I have to say the weather there was perfect. Apparently, I just missed the heat wave that appears to be setting in this week throughout that country. I’ll write more about that trip in my Friday post.

But today it’s all about Canada. In spite of my obvious love affair with France, I want to be clear that it does not preclude my pride in  being Canadian. As I’ve done in the past, I want to share a link to one of the best videos about our country that I’ve seen … and the credit for it belongs to our neighbours to the south.

Please click right here, sit back and enjoy as Tom Brokaw explains Canada to Americans.

This time last year, I celebrated Canada Day at a cooking class in Avignon with the great group of ladies on our south of France tour with the Womens Travel Network. What a good time that was! We may do it again, so be sure to contact Debbie Ross if you think you would like to join us!

Some Friday Fantasy

May 23, 2015 by Patricia Sands

If it’s Friday it must be France …

Writing deadlines trump blog posts. I’m in the final stretch of completing Book #3  of my Love In Provence series.  (Title vote coming soon, dear newsletter subscribers …) Every minute possible at the moment is devoted to reaching that light at the end of the tunnel. I can see it! *waving*

Soon, the manuscript will be in the hands of my enthusiastic and supportive Lake Union Publishing editor, Danielle Marshall. I love the editing process and am excited to dive in.

But I also love doing my Friday in France posts and don’t want to miss sharing this. So here’s a quickie that is mostly photographs. I’ll elaborate another day on the beautifully elegant Le Train Bleu in Paris. There are a lot of intriguing stories … as you might imagine! (Think Coco Chanel, Brigitte Bardot, Jean Cocteau, Colette, Marcel Pagnol, for starters.)

Initially called “Buffet de la Gare de Lyon”, it was renamed “Le Train Bleu” in 1963, after the famous train of the same name.

Pour yourself a coffee, tea, glass of wine … and come along. I hope you enjoy this visit.  Have you been? The meals are exquisite but simply stopping in for your beverage of choice is well worth the experience.

First, go to the Gare de Lyon. It’s easy to reach by the Metro system.

Walk to the very front of the station … then look up above the trains … and voilà … since 1901.

Climb the elegant staircase …

Walk through the door and enter a time gone by …

In The Promise of Provence, Katherine rushed to see this iconic restaurant on her visit to Paris. It was high on the “must visit” list Philippe had put together for her.

Ever since writing that scene I’ve been obsessed IMG_0036with returning there (after more years than I care to say out loud … yikes!). I’m pretty sure that first time my travel buddy and I snuck in for a peek … those were the days we traveled with Europe on $5 A Day as our bible.

So three weeks ago, my husband and I had a delicious lunch at Le Train Bleu … joined, quite coincidentally, by our friend Carol Perehudoff, the fabulous travel blogger. Click right here to follow her hilarious and informative posts on Wandering Carol as she explores the world. She’s rated in the Top Ten luxury travel bloggers by USA Today and deservedly so.

How Carol and I discovered we were in Paris at the same time with reservations at Le Train Bleu for the same day is a story for another day.

Have you ever visited Le Train Bleu? I would love to hear about it!

Bon weekend!

I just discovered this postcard ~ what fun to see the restaurant truly has retained the original atmosphere.

If it’s Friday, it must be France …

St-Remy-de-Provence
St-Remy-de-Provence

Now here’s a great combination: support a worthwhile cause and have a chance on winning a magical week in a lovely villa in St-Remy-de Provence, plus additional goodies, FREE … not including airfare.

My friend, Julie Mautner has all the details on her latest issue of The Provence Post.  Click right here for all the links to this very worthwhile fundraiser. If you love to know what’s going on in Provence and don’t subscribe to Julie’s site, you should!

Each 10GBP donation (about $15.00) buys you one chance to win and you can enter as often as you like. All proceeds go directly to Busoga Trust’s water and sanitation projects in Uganda.

I’m going to buy my tickets right now. Good luck to you ~ bonne chance!

If you have a minute to relax right now, sit back and enjoy a visit to the beautiful hilltop village of Eze. Click right here for a photo essay of mine posted on the LLM website and it just might fuel some more of your travel fantasies.

Picture yourself strolling through this ancient archway …

I’m deep in my writing den working on book #3 of the Love In Provence series,  but I always have time to indulge in fantasies about France. Just 15 more days before lift off for our summer stay over there. I’ll take you all along with me right here on the blog and also on Instagram. Will you keep me company? I hope so!

Bon weekend, tout le monde! As Ellen says, “Be kind to one another!”

Back into the cave …

March 14, 2015 by Patricia Sands

If it’s Friday, it must be France …

There is such joy in having children and grandchildren visit for their March break holiday. I wouldn’t trade it for the world! After the final wave goodbye, accompanied by a sniffle or two,  there is the absolute necessity to clamber back into my writing cave and attempt to get caught up. Ha! As if that ever really happens …

However, this cave is not a bad place to be when I’m writing about the Côte d’Azur and Provence. Photos, memories, and words carry me into my fantasies. The characters begin to take charge. Writing fiction is always an adventure.

This is a view of Antibes taken from the top of the 500-year-old Fort Carré that sits overlooking the harbour. Beyond the old town, sits the forested Cap d’Antibes. If you follow my Love In Provence series, this is where Kat and Philippe have been investing time and energy restoring a long-neglected property with the hope of of a bright future.

I wonder what’s happened to them in the week I’ve left them to their own devices? I know there will be a surprise or two in store for me … and, eventually, you!

I was reminded of this quote from William Styron:

“A great book should leave you with many experiences, and slightly exhausted at the end. You live several lives while reading.”

He might have added “as does the author while writing!”

Bon weekend, tout le monde!
