This writing life …

August 5, 2016 by Patricia Sands

If it’s Friday, it must be France …

For some reason, all I can think of today is the sweet taste of these luscious strawberries we purchased at a village market last month in Provence. I do believe they were the most delicious I’ve ever eaten!

IMG_3523

Today is the first rainy day we’ve had in two months of travel.  So … full disclosure here … that makes it the first day in two months that I’ve spent totally committed to writing on my computer.

I’ve been doing lots of research, note-taking,6a02fc955770e85cdd1f9481322c2f3d photography, interviewing, talking with locals … spent HOURS thinking and planning … but not a lot of actual writing. Of course, there were a few hours here and there most days, but not one full, chained-to the laptop, blow-out writing day.

Once you get rolling with your WIP, those days become more and more frequent!

And that berry photo up above had a lot to do with getting me going today and pulling me directly into the words I was writing.

Photo prompts work very well for me when I’m developing a story. My character was eating strawberries … just like these … small, juicy, full-flavoured. And look at the colour! Don’t you want to pop one in your mouth too and sample that exquisite taste sensation?

I also had this next photo on my screen, helping me recall the sounds, smells and other visuals of a typical village market. The air is always filled with laughter, conversation, and greetings as friends greet each other and vendors invite everyone to sample their wares in the most engaging ways.

IMG_3507

So now the narrative flows in earnest … I can sense it … and it feels good … the story is ready to be told! I’m well into the fifth chapter and feel excited about the way things are unfolding. It takes a while to really connect with new characters and for us to figure each other out. Truly! But you’ve heard me and other writers allude to that before. It’s part of the fun of writing fiction.

After living with Kat, Philippe, and friends for the past five years, I had to welcome some new voices into my life … and I’m liking them more and more. I miss the old familiar crew though, and look forward to getting back to another trilogy with them once this new novel is published.

Thanks for the deluge of emails I’ve received asking me to continue writing about the Love In Provence characters. I’m touched that you feel so connected to them. They will be back. I promise you this … to borrow from that last book title!

Apart from writing and all that goes into a new book, authors are also always looking at new ways to market their work. Whether we are indie authors or signed to a publisher, book marketing still takes a lot of effort from the writer.

I had some fun with our visiting granddaughters in France as we set up some shots with the Love In Provence book covers. Here are a few of our efforts.

This first shot is in front of the daily Provençal market in Antibes, where Kat initially met Philippe in The Promise of Provence. (And I better do a bit of cropping at the bottom … although it makes me smile to know that sweet hand belongs to a granddaughter!)

Then we posed Promises to Keep to replicate the cover art. Oops, we didn’t quite get my thumb out of the way!

IMG_4191If you’ve finished reading I Promise You This, then you will know that the door to the Mairie is an important detail in that story. There’s that cute hand again!

IMG_4157

Next come a couple of our efforts with all three books.

I’ll be sending some of the shots to TripFiction.com to see if they are good enough to use. Even if they aren’t, we had a lot of fun setting them up.

(And here, please allow me to share a few words about travel with grandchildren: what fun!  We had a week in Antibes with Meg, 17 and Jess, 15, and then a week later with Lauren, 21, who will also join us in Vienna next week. Our grandson, Ethan, 19, will also be there with us.We highly recommend the experience!)

Now back to the topic of writing. If you don’t follow TripFiction, I highly recommend you do. They feature novels set in specific locations and have been fabulous about promoting the Provence books. For those of us who enjoy a travel aspect in the stories we read, you will discover many enticing books to add to your TBR stack by checking their website and Instagram gallery.

I brought some of TripFiction’s postcards with me this summer so they could travel along, like this shot in Arles. You may spot some of them on Instagram.

So that’s the scoop for now from me. I hope your summer is going well and that you are reading a book that’s a page-turner! Feel free to let us in on the name. Readers are always looking for recommended books ~ there’s no better review than word of mouth!

And now back to writing! Bon weekend, everyone!

If it’s Friday, it must be Finland …

April 1, 2016 by Patricia Sands

If it’s Friday, it must be Finland …

That’s it! I’ve decided not to write about France any more. I’m sure I’ve said more than enough about it these past few years. I don’t want to bore you. It’s time to move on.

Finland seems like an interesting and beautiful country for us to explore. I hope you’ll enjoy our change of scene as much as I will.

APRIL FOOLS! As if you hadn’t already guessed! As lovely as Finland might be, you know I’m addicted to France.

And so we’ll carry on … like this …

IMG_0328 IMG_0379 IMG_6062 IMG_7138 IMG_8212

I never get tired of sharing scenes like this with you and I hope you feel the same way.

As I wrote in a blog post last year, April 1st is celebrated in an altogether different way in France.

Imagine my surprise the first time I saw childrenimages sticking paper fish on each other’s back, whispering and giggling, and then hollering, “Poisson d’Avril!”

Excusez-moi? Fish?

As Wikipedia explains: “In Italy, France and Belgium, children and adults traditionally tack paper fishes on each other’s back as a trick and shout “April fish!” in their local languages (pesce d’aprile!, poisson d’avril! and aprilvis! in Italian, French and Flemish, respectively). Such fish feature prominently on many late 19th- to early 20th-century French April Fools’ Day postcards.

I had no idea where the tradition began and, after a bit of searching, found this explanation on France Travel Guide.

“Although the origin of April Fools is obscure and debated, the most widely accepted explanation actually credits the “holiday” as starting in France. The most popular theory about the origin of April Fool’s Day involves the French calendar reform of the sixteenth century.

The theory goes like this: In 1564 King Charles XIV of France reformed the calendar, moving the start of the year from the end of March to January 1.

However, in a time without trains, a reliable post system or the internet, news often traveled slow and the uneducated, lower class people in rural France were the last to hear of and accept the new calendar. Those who failed to keep up with the change or who stubbornly clung to the old calendar system and continued to celebrate the New Year during the week that fell between March 25th and April 1st, had jokes played on them.

Pranksters would surreptitiously stick paper fish to their backs. The victims of this prank were thus called Poisson d’Avril, or April Fish—which, to this day, remains the French term for April Fools—and so the tradition was born.”

Boulangeries and patisseries deliciously get into the spirit with fish-shaped goodies. Oh … and did I mention the chocolatiers? Schools of fish of all sizes fill shop windows, the larger ones often filled with smaller treats. To a chocoholic, fish never tasted so good!

Since Easter usually falls around the same time, fish feature predominantly in shop windows through that holiday as well.

Maybe we should adopt a symbol for April Fool’s Day in North America, so there would be a good excuse to buy special chocolates on that day over here. Not that we ever really need an excuse for chocolate …

Wherever you are, have fun on April 1st and enjoy some chocolate.

Are you a prankster on April 1st or do you just grit your teeth and hope the day will pass quickly? Is there one April Fool’s Day joke in particular that you will never forget?

On  The Good Life France   (amazing photography and articles ~ you know I’m a huge fan!), there’s an article by Margo Lestz on this same topic.  Margo writes great articles, as well as entertaining books about some of the quirky history and traditions of France.  Click here and enjoy!

International Women’s Day 2016 ~ Photo Exhibit

March 7, 2016 by Patricia Sands

pledgeforparity

Tuesday, March 8, is globally recognized as International Women’s Day.

This day means different things to different people. For some it’s a celebration, for others it’s a call to action to accelerate gender parity, and for many it’s an opportunity to align and promote relevant activity. Whatever your objective, International Women’s Day is the perfect moment for gender-focused action.

The official United Nations theme for International Women’s Day this year is Planet 50-50 by 2030: Step It Up for Gender Equality. In other words, #Pledge For Parity. You can take this pledge by clicking on this link. Go ahead. Take action. At the very least, do this.

Leaders across the world are pledging to take action as champions of gender parity. Click here to see what might be planned in your area.

After you’ve taken ten seconds to take the pledge, treat yourself to this stunning collection of photographs of women around the world, compiled by Toronto’s own Journeywoman, Evelyn Hannon. This is a stunning celebration of women uniquely contributing to their communities.

12809572_10153247234692583_8340262764923178628_n Evelyn shares her thoughts on the project:  “As I add the finishing touches to our ‘2016 Journeywoman International Woman’s Day Photography Exhibit,’ I dedicate this year’s compilation to all daughters and granddaughters wherever they live in this great big world. My hope is that with time this young generation of females will bring us closer to a place of equal opportunity for women and for men. As Mothers, Aunts, and Grandmothers we believe in them and willEvelyn-Hannon do everything we can to support them.”

Each photo is a study in itself, but was there one in particular that stood out for you?

This eye-catching study was taken by my friend, Carol Perehudoff, a.k.a luxury blogger, Wandering Carol. I keep waiting for the image to start moving. Unforgettable!
