Meet Women’s Fiction Author, Grace Greene

July 31, 2016 by Patricia Sands

This week it’s a pleasure to welcome Grace Greene to my blog.Grace Greene Grace writes women’s fiction and contemporary romance with suspense. A Virginia native, Grace has family ties to North Carolina. She writes books set in both locations. Allow me to introduce you to her.

Hello, Grace! Thanks for taking time to slip away from the beach and visit with us. What a summer you’ve been enjoying! I know writing new stories has been a top priority.

Now let’s share some of your news with everyone!

PS ~ Congratulations! You recently left your job to write full-time and that’s a serious step to take. Were you involved in writing-related work before?

GG ~ I’ve worked in financial institutions as a risk manager for many years. It is fascinating work. Basically, you look for what may go wrong before it actually does and seek solutions to prevent it, or if the problem has already occurred, you look for a resolution. From a wordsmith’s perspective, the job didn’t align with novel writing, but in terms of story development, it did. Not so much in the details, but rather from the perspective of how “what-ifs” function. Prior to that I worked in the cable industry and dealt with customer complaints and cable theft. It gave me unexpected, surprising insights into human nature and the extreme lengths to which some people will go to get what they want, including television programming, and that job certainly contributed to understanding the vagaries of character.

PS ~ Your debut novel, Beach Rental, won the Booksellers Best contest in both the Traditional and Best First Book categories. What was the inspiration behind the story?

GG ~ The original idea for Beach Rental didn’t involve the beach at all, but rather, it Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000032_00032]was a story of “What if a young woman who grew up in a variety of foster homes with no advantages and no family, who values being independent and self-sufficient, but has never learned to dream ~ is given the opportunity to dream and the means by which to achieve those dreams?” I needed somewhere to set the story and thought of Emerald Isle. My family and I had spent a week at an oceanfront home in Emerald Isle, North Carolina several years ago. I believe it was the inspiration I personally experienced at the ocean that I wanted to bring to the story, to use it to inspire the character, Juli. I chose the house where we stayed as the primary location for the novel and the publisher allowed me to design the cover using a photograph I’d taken of the white Carolina rockers on our porch during our stay there. It’s pretty cool to be able to say I sat in those rocking chairs while visiting the ocean and also get to enjoy them on the cover of my book.

Emerald Isle Trip - The House

PS ~ As a fiction writer, what do you enjoy most about the process? Do you have a specific writing regime?

GG ~ This is a great question, and it’s especially timely given my move to full time writing. Almost three months ago, I left the day job to write full time. It was a big decision. I had a great job but between the demands of that job and the needs of my mom who has Alzheimer’s, I was exhausted in the evenings and weekends and was writing almost nothing. If I left the day job, I’d have lots of time to write but what if I was lured into chasing distractions? Or what if the words dried up? Some of my writer friends had already made the leap. I asked them what they’d learned during their transitions. They advised me to stay open—to plan when to write but to be guided by what worked best. I’ve done that and have found that my best writing time is in the morning, so I start my writing workday in my jammies and write until almost noon. At that time, I shower and dress and, hopefully, write more in the afternoon. My goal at this time is 3000 words a day and that’s happening pretty reliably during the first draft stage.

It was a huge coincidence that at the same time I was giving notice at the day job, Amazon’s Women’s Fiction imprint, Lake Union, approached me about writing two Women’s Fiction novels for them. What amazing timing that was! I could never had taken on that challenge while working full time. Yet, being offered that opportunity at that time was like a validation of my decision.

PS ~ Many of your novels involve a suspenseful story line. What is your favorite genre to read?

GG ~ I enjoy reading almost all genres of fiction, some more than others, of course. I love Women’s Fiction, because it combines multiple genres, generally a love story or relationship story of some kind, combined with suspense or mystery, but dwells most particularly within the protagonist’s experience—the woman’s journey. I like that the best. I also enjoy reading mystery and suspense, and horror, too, if the authors are Stephen King and Dean Koontz.

PS ~ When you have time to take a break, do you have any particular hobbies, interests or sports that you enjoy?

GG ~ I like to take walks and ride my bike when the weather is good, but I incorporate my writing tasks into those activities by using Dragon (for dictating) or Text Aloud (listening for editing) or listening to audio books about writing. For pure relaxation, I like to walk on the beach (not terribly convenient since I live in central Virginia) and take photos, or watch a movie.

How I travelI also love photography and graphics and spend a lot of time in Photoshop, but again, I’m usually doing book or book marketing related tasks in Photoshop.

My husband and I like to travel whether for day trips or cruises or more. I enjoy visiting historical homes and botanical gardens. We were in Hawaii last Christmas and traveled to Alaska a couple of years before that. We hope to do more traveling now that I’m my own boss.

I’m rarely in the photos, though, because I’m the one behind the camera!

PS ~ What might we expect next from you?

GG ~ I am currently working on the two Women’s Fiction novels for Lake Union. The first book is currently in the editing stage and I’m working on the first draft for the second. They will be published in 2017, in February and July, respectively. I am enjoying working on them. Writing full time instead of part time makes a huge difference in the progress and in my enjoyment.

When I accepted the contract for those two books, I put aside a book that I was working on, the third full length novel in the Emerald Isle, NC Stories series which I self-publish. The first novel in the series, Beach Rental, is Juli’s story. The second, Beach Winds, is Frannie’s story. Readers have told me that Maia needs her own story, and I wholeheartedly agree. As soon as the two Lake Union novels are finished, I’ll have the opportunity to finish that third Emerald Isle novel, and I can hardly wait because “It’s always a good time for a love story and a trip to the beach.”

Spend some time with Christine Nolfi!

June 22, 2016 by Patricia Sands

Many of you are accustomed to seeing me involved in writing events and projects with Christine Nolfi.Nolfi-Photo-150x150 Collaboration is just one of the many rich and satisfying aspects of a writer’s world. Christine has also now been signed by Lake Union Publishing so we have even more opportunities to interact.

Hi Christine! It’s great fun to have you stop by for a chat!

Patricia, many thanks for the opportunity to stop by your blog! For those readers who are unaware, Patricia and I have been friends for quite a long time. She’s one of the first authors I had the luck of meeting when I began publishing.

Thanks for taking the time to answer these questions and give us a glimpse into your writing world.

PS ~ Have you always been drawn to writing? Was there a particular time in your life when you knew you simply had a story to share with the world?

CN ~ Like many novelists, I can’t recall a time when I wasn’t writing stories! In childhood, I had the other kids on the street convinced fairies had hidden treasures we’d find if we searched hard enough, and in high school, the literary magazine gave my stories front page billing. For many years I worked in public relations. When my children were in elementary school, I finally put storytelling front and center—the Liberty Series was the result.

PS ~ Your stories are described as 51vnQT3UNaL._UY250_“heartwarming and inspirational”, and they certainly are! Do you draw from past experiences in your own life when you develop an idea?

CN ~ Absolutely. I’ve had the luck of an interesting life, meeting an abundance of unusual people over the years. Many of my plots begin with a memory or an idea drawn from those past experiences. For example, the underlying story of Birdie finding her roots in Treasure Me is drawn from my personal history: my French ancestors were among the first families to settle in Charleston, South Carolina in the 1680s.

PS ~ When you begin a story, do you have an outline or do you have a particular writing style?

CN ~ I can’t begin work until a general outline becomes clear, and I’m certain of the main characters’ deep motivations and desires. The plot evolves and often changes as the characters come to life on the page.

PS ~ Is there a particular novel of yours that is your favorite? Why that one?

CN ~ Although I’ve fallen in love with characters of each novel I’ve written, THE TREE OF EVERLASTING KNOWLEDGE holds a special place in my heart. The themes underpinning the story were drawn directly from my experiences as an adoptive mother. In fact, several of the scenes in the novel were inspired by actual events. Like the book’s heroine, I underwent a personal transformation while helping my children put the nightmare of an abusive early childhood behind them.

PS ~ You create strong, engaging characters in all of your stories. Are any of those personalities based on people you have actually met?

CN ~ I suspect my characters represent an amalgam of personalities I’ve met over the years. I never begin work with the notion of representing an actual person in one of my novels.

PS ~ Your new Wheaten Terrier pup, Lucy, looks like such fun and I’m sure she offers great diversion to your day. What else do you like to do when you aren’t writing?

CN ~ We adore Lucy! Barry and I moved to Charleston five years ago; in many ways, we’re still in tourist mode. We love strolling the beach, visiting the historical sites—Charleston is one of the oldest cities in the U.S., a distinctive the city shares with Boston. Lately I’ve begun researching my Postell ancestry—two weeks ago, I visited the oldest French Huguenot church, appropriately located on Church Street, and discovered the man hosting the tours was a distant cousin. The next thirty minutes were spent in astonishment as he described our ancestral connection to many of the founding families of Charleston.

PS ~ Congratulations on recently signing a contract with Amazon Publishing’s Lake Union, the women’s fiction imprint. Can you give us a sneak peek at what you will be writing for them and a publication date?

CN ~ Like the Liberty Series, the new series for Lake Union will feature a small town with a cast of quirky characters. I’ve had too much fun writing the debut to call this work! The first book will release in February 2017. The second book will release in July 2017. I hope readers enjoy these new books—I’d love to write ten or more installments for the new series!

Christine’s bio ~

Some writers are gifted with an unusual life and I’m certainly one of those.SCG 180x240.jgp I’ve lived in Ohio, Virginia, California, Utah and now South Carolina. In college I was featured on the front page of the Houston Post for a lark that erased all my debt. I met my four adopted children for the first time in the sweltering heat of the tropics. I helped build several companies and was lucky enough to earn a living doing what I love best–writing–in a PR firm I owned.

In 2004 I made the wisest and most irrational decision of my life–I began writing fiction full-time. All those years of hard work pay off daily in sweet notes and comments by readers. Please continue the mail, tweets and comments on FaceBook, GoodReads and other sites. I cherish your support and love chatting with readers.

Suzanne Kelman is in the house!

March 15, 2016 by Patricia Sands

canstockphoto8136400There are a lot of great new novels being released by friends in the next couple of months. My TBR list keeps growing and growing! How about yours?

Suzanne Kelman is a fellow author in Amazon’s Lake Union Publishing group, the “Lovely Ladies of the Lake” as she has christened us.  The Rejected Writers’ Book Club will be released on March 29th and I can’t wait to read it.

When you read Suzanne’s work her humour shines through and when you talk to her it’s contagious. She and author KJ Waters have a regular podcast, Blondie And The Brit  and I was delighted to be a guest with them last month. There was a lot of laughter!

Welcome, Suzanne!

PS ~ Congratulations on the51NUncEkikL-1._SX332_BO1,204,203,200_ upcoming release (March 29th) of your first novel, The Rejected Writers’ Book Club! I’ve pre-ordered my copy! Please tell us a bit about the story and how you came to write it.

SK ~ The Rejected Writers’ Book Club started out as a screenplay. I began writing the script but the more I worked on it, the more I realized I needed to delve into the characters in a much deeper fashion than is possible in 110 pages of a movie script. So, I decided to play with it, and for fun, I took on the 2013 Na-Na-Wri-Mo challenge. On a dark, stormy, November, night the Book Club was born.

The story came about because I had noticed there was a lot of shame around writers and rejection. I went to a book signing once, and the author started the reading by tipping all his rejection letters from publishers onto the table to demonstrate the length of his path to publication. I was very impressed, and it was liberating for the writers around me. After that, I always had the hankering to write about celebrating rejection. It is a part of the path to publication, and each letter proves a writer was brave enough to send their work out into the world.

PS ~  You have an impressive background in screenwriting, Suzanne. How did you get involved in that?

996097_10202738741089294_515605397_nSK ~ Another interesting story. My background is originally in theater, and similar to my novel writing career, I became a screenwriter by accident. I was writing a stage play that wouldn’t lie down and be staged. Are you beginning to see a pattern? Anyway, the longer I worked on it as a stage play, the harder time I was having staging it, as I kept visualizing it on a movie screen. I was talking to my writing mentor about my frustrations, and he said, “why don’t you just write it as a screenplay, instead?” And I thought, why not.

I knew nothing about screenwriting, so I started from the bottom. I literally went to “Utube University” and typed in “How to write a screenplay” and went from there. What happened after that was love at first draft. I realized something vital about myself on the pages of that first script; it was that I wrote in pictures. The jump from the page to the screen was a wonderfully freeing experience for me. After that, I devoured everything I could about screenwriting, and I have gone on to write many more.

PS ~ Do you have a preference between writing screenplays or novels?

SK ~ They are such different animals it is hard to compare, and I love the variety they both bring me. Writing a book for me is like sitting down to an 8-course meal in France with three types of wine, a fish course and assorted sorbets in-between. You take your time, enjoy the company, and every flavor is revealed slowly along the long winding journey which is the meal.

On the other hand, writing a screenplay is not unlike being served one of those $100 gold leaf desserts all the enjoyment is packed into a few mouthfuls, but every bite is so exquisite with the intensity of the flavors. That is the difference for me, I just get up each day and decide what I want to eat before I start work.

PS ~ It was great fun chatting with you and KJ Waters on the podcast program the two of you host, Blondie and The Brit.jpegituneschannellogo How did the two of you begin this undertaking and how on earth do you manage to find the time? You are both fabulous interviewers, so relaxed and entertaining!

SK ~ I really enjoy podcasting, everything about it. I think it feeds my theater roots. First, I get to hang out with the author of Stealing Time, KJ Waters every week. We met four years ago, through Twitter, and she is an absolute hoot. Secondly, my world can be very isolating in my little studio as I beaver away creating invisible characters and make-believe worlds. But then the solidarity I feel connecting with other writers through podcasting is world stretching.

Once the interview is over we normally all feel like old friends. As far as time goes, neither KJ or I had any idea how long it would take to book guests, talk to guests, plan interviews, edit podcasts, etc. But, somehow we have managed to swing it because we both love doing it so much. It is one of the things I’m doing right now that I feel is not only of great value to our audience but also to our authors in their career. We are very excited to see where it all goes.

PS ~ You have made quite a transition moving from the U.K. to Washington State. Did your writing career begin before you moved or after?

SK ~ I have lived in America for 20 years and only started writing seriously in the past six. Having decided to homeschool my son I had to find a creative outlet that could be achieved easily from home. With my creative background, being a writer seemed to fit the bill. It’s funny I write every day now, and it seems strange to me that I haven’t done this for the whole of my life because I love it so much.

Local scenery that inspired the fictional 'Southlea Bay'
Local scenery that inspired the fictional        ‘Southlea Bay’

PS ~ I have great admiration for writers who bring laughter to their readers, and you do that brilliantly! Do you ever see yourself writing a serious novel or screenplay or will comedy always be your focus?

SK ~ Some of my screenplays have been serious, as I was finding my voice, but comedy is what I always seem to come back to. Over the last three years, I have been intentionally branding myself as a humor writer.

I grew up in a home where comedy was used as a pressure valve to deflate the volcanic eruptions in a family of five children. So, it is natural for me to see the world from a very comical persuasion. To make the whole world laugh is my goal because the value in that is so high. I have a couple of projects on my schedule at the moment that aren’t comedic, but somehow I always managed to sneak it in when I can.

PS ~ What plans do you have next to share with us?

SK ~ I have just finished a mid-grade comedy novel called “The Misadventures of Horace Higginbottom”, which I’m about to start shopping to publishers. Originally, I wrote it because my son was a voracious reader and he liked to read books that were funny. When we found a comedic series, we would order the whole set from the library so he could binge read them all. So I was sure there were other parents out there with the same problem. I wrote “Horace” to help encourage mid-graders to read chapter books.

I am also halfway through my second Southlea Bay Series book that I am hoping to complete by the end of May.

In my screenwriting career, I’m working on a T.V. series pilot and a feature film that are both in development. I know it all sounds like a lot, but I am a pick and mix kind of writer and find having more than one project helps stimulate the others. I may work on a screenplay on a Monday and a chapter of my book on Tuesday etc. subsequently I have never suffered from writer’s block and my days can be very adventurous as I navigate my waters.

PS ~ Suzanne, thanks for stopping by so we can all celebrate your new release. It’s been a pleasure getting to know you these past few months. Thanks, also, for having me as a guest on your podcast. You are offering a wonderful opportunity on that platform to other writers and it’s a great example of how authors support each other. Kudos to you and KJ Waters for that!
