What’s your excuse?

September 27, 2016 by Patricia Sands

I owe my blog an apology. And I extend it to all of you who have dropped by recently wondering why I haven’t added a new post for a while. Does your to-do list get overwhelming from time to time? How do you handle the overload?

Does making a list of excuses  … um … reasons, help? I was on that excuse train briefly and then put my nose to the grindstone and got to work.

If reality wasn’t a factor, I would have run away to that ancient, remote hilltop village of my dreams in the south of France … with the spectacular view of the Med, of course, … and wifi …

img_3796

Instead I’ve been caught up working on my next novel – writing and researching, catching up on other blogs, doing guest posts and this month’s newsletter, and becoming friends with my new computer. img_5059-1After the usual helpful advice from the knowledgable people in my local Apple store, we all came to the conclusion that another MacBook Pro was the answer. I have to say I was sorely tempted by those divinely thin MacBooks and MacBook Airs, but the Pro offered a bit more flexibility that I needed.  The beautiful choice of covers for the Pro was unexpected ~ guess I hadn’t seen the ads. I chose the colour because it reminded me of the Med along the Côte d’Azur ~ just the right inspiration!

150626-055-sm-CarmenBlike-R3And then there’s the matter of 48, 392 photos that I’m sifting through and organizing … ack! I do loooove to take photos … always have since I was a child with my first Kodak Brownie camera. Remember those?

I’m curious, do you keep all of your photos on your computer or an external hard drive? Do you make photo books?

I’m happy to say I’ve managed to cross off most items from my to-do list and I’m hoping it will be clear sailing for a while now. But then you never know. Life’s like that, right?

The photos are another matter. I suspect that project will be with me for quite a while, partly because it’s such a pleasure looking through old albums. Know what I mean?

Okay, enough about that. On we go!

In a few days October will be here. Yikes! That was fast!

Among other things, it is Breast Cancer Awareness Month (even though this awareness goes on every day, as we know.) A variety of events around the world are organized in October and landmark buildings in many countries are lit up in pink.

I’ll be sharing a few posts and websites with you in support of the initiative. I doubt there are many of us whose family and friends have not been touched by this pervasive disease. What I want to share with you is not about raising funds but rather about raising awareness and sharing important information. Please feel free to share the same with us here.

For starters, I encourage you to take some time to visit  Susie Lindau’s Boob Reports. Susie is an online friend and part of the worldwide writing community of which we are proud members. She shared her cancer battle openly on her fabulous blog, it’s truly an inspiration to read. She says, in true Susie fashion:

“It’s not that I’m a cancer survivor,

I’m a thriver.”

Let’s all be thrivers!

Enjoy these last days of sweet September … the month simply flew by for me. For you too?

Dete Meserve ~on writing, movies, but most of all, kindness …

September 10, 2016 by Patricia Sands

What a pleasure to welcome award-winning author and film/television producer Dete Meserve today!unnamed-1

When it comes to believing in the best in people and sharing stories of those who are doing powerful and uplifting things in our everyday world, Dete is a champion.  Like Kate Bradley in Meserve’s novels ‘Good Sam’ and ‘Perfectly Good Crime,’ she searches for people who are doing extraordinary good for others.

While most mysteries focus on finding the killer or kidnapper, Meserve’s novels focus our attention on finding the helpers, the rescuers, and the people who bring light and hope into the world with their selfless acts of kindness.

When she’s not writing, she is a film and television producer in Los Angeles and partner of Wind Dancer Films. Meserve lives in Los Angeles with her husband and three children—and a very good cat that rules them all.

Enjoy our chat:

PS ~ Congratulations on the recent release of your new novel, Perfectly Good 51e7l35tvhl-_uy250_Crime! The title is instantly intriguing and I’m looking forward to reading it. How does this story carry on with the “fast-paced mystery/romance” of your debut novel, Good Sam?

DM ~ In Good Sam, Los Angeles TV news reporter Kate Bradley is searching for an anonymous Good Samaritan who is leaving $100,000 cash on LA doorsteps. My latest novel, Perfectly Good Crime, picks up three months later when Kate reports on a series of sophisticated heists of some of the most opulent and extravagant estates in America.

As the heists escalate, Kate finds that the Los Angeles police detective she’s been working with mysteriously disappears, her senator father demands that she stop reporting on the heists, and the billionaire victims stop talking to the media. Kate uncovers clues that those behind the robberies have shocking, yet uplifting, intentions—it just may be a perfectly good crime that brings about powerful change.

PS ~ You give readers uplifting stories that focus on people who are doing extraordinarily good things for others. Are these stories based on true experiences?

DM ~ Both Good Sam and Perfectly Good Crime are 100% fiction but they come bpafegucyaa51wy-png-large-227x300from my desire to tell stories where the focal point is people who are doing extraordinary good. We live in a time when we are bombarded with stories of violence, cruelty, and injustice. Yet that isn’t a true reflection of everything that’s going on in the world. There are millions of people around the globe who are doing quiet and extraordinary good for others. For proof of that, check out my Facebook page and you’ll see thousands of true stories of ordinary people helping others (www.Facebook.com/GoodSamBook).

But it’s hard for us to see that Good. Our daily doses of troubling news can leave us feeling exhausted and in despair and when we seek a respite in entertainment, we’re bombarded with stories of violence and tragedy there too. We start to believe that’s what the world is.

But that’s not true. And that’s what I want to focus my books on.   Many mysteries focus on the dark side of crime, but in Perfectly Good Crime there’s a very big heists mystery but there isn’t a single dead body or any violence. Instead, Kate explores the real possibility that Good intentions may be behind the heists. I want readers to be turning pages trying to figure out who’s behind the heists and equally important, I hope the story gets readers thinking about ways we can all lift up others and made the world better.

PS ~ Did you always have a desire to be an author? Was this a natural progression of your career as a film and television producer and partner of Wind Dancer Films? Can you tell us a bit about that part of your busy life?

DM ~ What draws me to writing is that I love stories. As a kid, I read sci-fi, folktales, fairy tales, and mysteries and experienced firsthand the power of story to help us understand others, to make sense of our experiences, and to think about the big questions of life. And there are so many ways we can tell stories: radio, television, film, books and even games. I’ve been fortunate to write or produce stories in in all of these mediums.

I run a film and television company, Wind Dancer Films, and have three kids. After a day collaborating with other creators and overseeing business deals, I look forward to the creative, solitary moments of writing. And my busy work and family life actually helps my writing because I often draw inspiration from the characters, conflicts, experiences and emotions of my real life.

PS ~ Do you live right in Los Angeles? Has California always been ‘home’ to you?

DM ~ I grew up in Chicago and still love that city for its amazing food, music, and museums. During the cold winters when the roads were drifted high with snow, I’d often dream of living in sunny California. My husband and I moved to Los Angeles in 1990 so that I could take a position as an executive at KUSC, the public radio station at the University of Southern California. Our first six months here were bumpy as we transitioned into a new way of living but after that, we fell in love with Los Angeles and can’t imagine living anywhere else.

We live and work in Hollywood and while the city is known for its tourist attractions and entertainment business, we love it because there’s always great and interesting things to do whether you want fun, adventure, or a thoughtful, zen experience.

PS ~ How do you find balance between your professional and family life? Is there a particular way you like to relax in terms of hobbies, sports or something else?

DM ~ I wish I could nail the work/balance thing! Every time you think you’ve figured it out, something goes off the rails. The key is accepting that it’s never going to be perfectly in balance on any given day, but over time you know you’ve prioritized the things that are most important.

My family and I are omnivores when it comes to hobbies and interests. In any given month, we might find ourselves at a concert at Staples Center, trying out a new restaurant, taking in a Dodger game, horseback riding, heading to the beach or the mountains, watching our daughter perform in a rhythmic gymnastics competition, checking out a new movie, hanging out with friends, or heading to a museum or play.

PS ~ What’s next on your agenda? Is there something you can share with us?

DM ~ I’m working with award-winning journalist Rachel Greco on a non-fiction51hk7-liol-_uy250_ book which will feature 25 inspiring stories about real-life people who are transforming the lives of others through their good deeds. Rachel and I have been researching these emotionally powerful, uplifting stories together and we’re always amazed by the unique and creative ways people find to help others.

For the stories in the book, Rachel talks with those who are the “Good Sams” doing the good deeds as well as those the Good Sams have helped. The stories are poignant, funny, and sometimes heart wrenching and the one constant throughout is that the people helping others are always transformed by the experience and often say they received far more than they gave.

We think this will be an uplifting, inspiring book which readers will want to gift to others, that book clubs and church/synagogue groups will want to discuss, and that even kids and schools can use these stories as powerful real-life examples of compassion and making a difference in the lives of others.

You can find more information about Dete’s good works and good books on her Amazon Author Page and her website or Facebook.

Thanks so much for stopping by today, Dete. Like you, I’m a believer in the good in this world and the more each one of us can help share those stories, the better.

I would also like to share this news which we did not get around to including in our chat:

Good Sam is in development as a film for the Hallmark Channel to premiere in 2017. ) We will look forward to that so please keep us posted!

Dear readers ~ if you have a good story to share with Dete, please do by clicking right here. Take some time to read the inspiring posts already on the page and don’t forget to pay it forward!

I just had to do it …

August 22, 2016 by Patricia Sands

I know I’m taking the easy way out here but … I just had to do it! I have so much to share with you after our two months in Europe and just not enough time. Writing another novel seems to be eating those hours up in a hurry!

So I’m reposting my last newsletter here and I hope you enjoy it. If you are already a subscriber, please forgive me … and I hope you’ll be happy taking a peek at it again … My next one should be out in a week or so.

Newsletter #35                                                                       July 24, 2016

Bonjour mes amis

I’m writing to you on a beautiful calm, south of France kind of day and I hope you are enjoying a similarly peaceful day, wherever you are.

This header photo above is actually the front entrance to the exchange house we are enjoying in Antibes. Honestly, just opening the gate and seeing that front door when we come home each day is a calming factor in itself!

And there’s a resident tortoise in the garden that I have been asked to leave some lettuce and fruit for every morning. His name is Geoff!

A big MERCI to everyone who joined me and my seven other author friends for our Facebook book event on July 12th. We had a record attendance and it was great fun!

Here’s what I’ve been up to since my last letter.

Our two-week stay in Arles, just after my last newsletter, meant I was able to do a lot of research and planning for my current manuscript. It’s such an intriguing town with its Roman history so alive throughout with monuments and sites that are amazingly intact … after 2000 years.

I shared a lot of information and photos about Arles in my last newsletter and in this post on my blog last month.

One of the first things we did was get right over to the Fondation Vincent Van Gogh to see a current exhibit of 31 original paintings by the master. It’s on until September, if you are in the area.

A thrill was visiting the Antiquities Museum where a complete Roman transport boat is displayed. It was recovered from the sandy bottom of the Rhône river, that runs by Arles, in 2014. The story of how they managed to recover and preserve the boat is quite remarkable. The danger was that the disintegration of the wood could begin immediately once it was exposed to the air. Here’s a brief video about it.

I was fortunate to spend a day in the Camargue area just south of Arles: a unique, marshy triangular river delta, famous for its white horses, black bulls and pink flamingoes. The remarkable Aigues-Mortes, a medieval walled town is also located there. Have you ever been there?

Part of my next novel is set in this area and it was wonderful to have someone tour me around who is very familiar with the history.

Next, we spent three days in charming Saint-Remy-de-Provence at the delightful Maison-de-Line B&B (within easy walking distance of the old town). I was excited to take my husband to Les Carrières de Lumières near Les Baux. Chagall’s work is featured this year. If you are visiting the area, be sure to take this in!

Before leaving for the coast, I also was fortunate to spend some special days in new (to me) towns. One day Carolyne Kauser-Abbott, founder of Perfectly Provence, toured me around the captivating village of Eygalières. And … bonus … it was market day!
Carolyne introduced me to a talented young woman who creates these gorgeous lavender fuseaux (wands) in the traditional way taught to her by her grandmère. I was glad to know that Carolyne features them for sale in her Atelier on Perfectly Provence. I couldn’t resist and bought three at the market!

On another bright, sunny day, I took a bus from Arles to Uzés where Deborah Bine, The Barefoot Blogger, gave me an insider’s tour. It was so much fun to meet her in person and last week she came to Antibes so I could return the favour.

After all of the terrible events happening around the globe, I feel even more committed to continue writing stories that somehow carry us all away to happier places. In fact, those events compelled me to focus even more on the positive in the manuscript I’m currently working on. Now if I could just stop being distracted by the beauty around me at the moment, I might make more progress!

As always, I am in my happiest place when settled on the Côte d’Azur … and particularly in Antibes, surrounded by the images from my Love In Provence novels. This year we are in the Juan-les-Pins side of Antibes and tonight we’re going for dinner at the Hôtel Belles-Rives. Kat and Molly spent an evening there with Nick and Graham in The Promise of Provence. I have a feeling I may sense their presence.

Click here to read the past and current history of the hotel.

Even more so, I hope to feel the spirits of F. Scott Fitzgerald and his wife, Zelda … well, maybe not Zelda who was basically having a breakdown during that time. They lived here when it was the private Villa St. Louis in 1925/26.  It was on this property that he pennedTender is the Night, as well as working on aspects of other stories.

In a letter to Hemingway, Fitzgerald wrote, ““With our being back in a nice villa on my beloved Riviera (between Nice and Cannes) I’m happier than I’ve been for years. It’s one of those strange, precious and all too transitory moments when everything in one’s life seems to be going well.”

It’s a pity the rest of his life did not play out that way, but he certainly left the world some excellent novels.

Our teenage granddaughters came from Toronto to spend last week with us. What a joy that was! We loved sharing travels with our children in years past and to have that opportunity with this next generation was special indeed. Have you travelled with grandchildren? I heartily recommend it!

With just a week to take them to some of the places we love, we managed to accomplish a lot and the girls were fabulous company. They also took the best selfies!

More good news for us is that our oldest granddaughter, newly graduated from university as a registered nurse, is arriving here this afternoon. I’m going to hop on the train to Cannes (just two stops) to meet her at the bus station where she is arriving from Barcelona.

I better finish up this letter and spend the next few hours writing!

I you would like to see more, just check on my blog every week. If you care to subscribe to it, you’ll automatically know when a new post is written.

My recipe this month is for the classic French sandwich, le croque-monsieur i.e. the French version of a grilled cheese. Every once in a while, it’s a must to eat one!

Stay well, my friends, be kind to one another, read a lot and appreciate every single day. Profitez de tous les jours! I’m reminded on a regular basis that the best part of being an author is hearing from readers. I value the messages I receive from you. Thanks also for sharing my books with your friends and for the reviews you write. It’s all most appreciated and inspiring. See you next month!

Rosemont, Downtown Abbey ~ Barbara Hinske shares her news

August 13, 2016 by Patricia Sands

This week it’s a pleasure to have Barbara HinskeScreen shot 2013-02-21 at 7.23.18 PM drop by the blog.  For those of you who are meeting Barb for the first time, she is an attorney by day; novelist by night … in fact, an Amazon and BookBub bestselling author, to boot! Barb inherited the writing gene from her father who wrote mysteries when he retired and told her a story every night of her childhood.

When I first met Barb, I was immediately interested to discover she was an avid Downtown Abbey fan who posted weekly on her website about it. I couldn’t wait to talk to her about it.

Join me!

PS ~ Let’s get the ball rolling by talking about Downtown Abbey! One of my favourite topics! It was great fun to follow your reviews, teasers, and posts while the series was in progress. Are you going to leave all of that on your website so fans can continue to enjoy it, even though the series is over … *stifling a sob*

BH ~ I’m still in mourning over this, too! At least it looks like there will be a DA movie. I’m definitely going to leave the reviews and posts on my website. Many of us will turn to our DVDs for a bit of binge watching and I know people will continue to enjoy the posts. Writing those reviews opened up the UK market for me and I’ve made some lovely friends “across the pond”. I want to keep that going.

PS ~ And now you are giving the same glorious coverage to Home Fires. How do you feel it compares to DA?

BH ~ I’ve adored Home Fires. While it lacks the spectacular settings and clothes of DA, it’s similar to DA in that it features a superb ensemble cast of characters that you come to know and care about. I love the connections of the women that are at the core of the story. The writing is brilliant. iTV cancelled the show at the end of the second season, leaving us to cope with a cliff hanger. There’s been a tremendous outpouring of support for the show but no one else has picked it up (yet). It’s a two-season gem of a show.

PS ~ You’re a busy woman with full-time careers as an attorney and a prolific writer. How do you manage to balance your time and interests?

51ZJU1Onr4L._SY346_BH ~ My children are grown, so I’ve now got my evenings and weekends to spend on my writing. I’m blessed with an amazing amount of energy and (like my mother) don’t need more than 5 hours of sleep. I wake up very early and spend an hour or so writing or working on the business aspects of being an author (publishing, marketing, etc) before I go to work. I’m too tired after work to write, so I answer emails and post to social media. I do most of my writing on the weekends. I’m a fast writer and can turn out 4000 words each day. My all-time high was 9000 words (that was a very long day).

PS ~ You’ve made very good use of YouTube videos and have been extremely innovative in having a prelude composed specifically for your Rosemont series. Please tell us how you became interested in this particular aspect of book marketing.

BH ~ I try to keep myself informed of the current trends in marketing and YouTube’s popularity has skyrocketed. My house is the perfect backdrop for videos. I’m the nosiest person on the planet and I always love seeing other people’s homes, so I thought my readers would be curious about my old house.

PS ~ Your home in Phoenix is beautiful and, as you mention, the model for your Rosemont series. How long have you lived there and was owning and maintaining a stately home always a dream of yours?

BH ~ My husband and I bought our home in 2010, right before we got married and combined households. We got married at the base of the staircase and I swept down the stairs on my son’s arm.

Our home is a stately historic home in Phoenix. I lived within walking distance of it and had driven by it for years and loved it. My husband grew up in Phoenix and his family passed it every Sunday after church. His dad always said he’d like to buy the house and fix it up (at that time, it was in sad shape).

We toured the house on the day it went on the market and made an offer the next morning. The house was a short sale and it was vacant, dirty, and dark (the utilities had been turned off). Despite that, we both knew as soon as the mahogany front door closed behind us that we would buy that home. We hadn’t even seen the rest of the house! Our experience inspired a scene at the beginning of Coming to Rosemont. We feel so blessed that we were able to buy this house. The people we bought it from had restored it beautifully and we feel like we are being good stewards of it. We both love to entertain and this house is perfect.

IMG_0355

I feel like our home is almost a living thing. When I bring home a décor item (from a consignment or thrift store – I’m addicted to thrifty shopping), I always tell the house that I’ve bought it a present.

PS ~ That’s a beautiful story in many ways, Barb. It sounds like this house was meant to be your home. What pets do you have at the moment and how are they incorporated into your story-telling?

BH ~ Brian and I are currently servants to a golden retriever named Roman and a terrier/dachshund mix named Abby. I can’t imagine living without a dog or cat and I love writing about them. They bring people such happiness and connect people in delightful ways. I wrote a golden retriever (named Roman) into the Rosemont series. Eve in the Rosemont series is based upon my Jack Russell terrier that went over the rainbow bridge years ago but lives on in my heart.

IMG_0521

PS ~ Would you like to give us a sneak peek at what readers can eagerly anticipate from you?

BH ~ Drawing Close, the fourth novel in the Rosemont series, is now available on Amazon and for Kindle as of August 1. It was my favorite book in the series to write and advance reviews have been very favorable.

I’ve finished a novella titled The Christmas Club and it will be available this holiday season. I’ve got a standalone thriller in outline and I’m working on concepts for a new mystery series.

And I’ve just begun to write the fifth book in the Rosemont series.

That’s a busy schedule! But I know you agree that, as writers, we’re doing work we love. Thanks so much for spending time with us here.
