O Canada

October 24, 2014 by Patricia Sands 19 Comments

Along with all Canadians, my sympathies go out Unknown-1to the families of  Cpl. Nathan Frank Cirillo and  Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent, both tragically killed in the chilling events of this past week.

This was a sad and tragic thing that happened. What is going on with our world lately? Canada and it’s citizens have our prayers too.

Thanks, Phil, that’s sweet of you. Really these events were more about very unbalanced people committing senseless killings and less about terrorists … nothing like what America has endured. However it was a wake-up call for our country to step up some security measures. We have always prided ourselves on the open accessibility to pretty much everything in Canada and I guess that will have to change. You’re right, it’s a pretty crazy world these days but we will all keep doing our bit to keep things calm in our little corners. Blog on, my friend!

Please know that we Americans honour your brave men who made the ultimate sacrifice. A special salute to the hero Sgt. Baker. You are a treasure to your country. I have just started breathing again.

Nancy, we all held our breath for a while until we knew exactly what was going on ~ you’re so right about that! I’m glad that these were not really terrorist attacks but rather very unfortunate incidents. However there could have been a very, very disastrous outcome on Parliament Hill with just the slightest change of timing and it does mean, some things will change as far as security goes. That’s probably not a bad thing in light of the crazies out there these days..

I’ve just come to your post, having just read this one: http://lovethosehandsathome.wordpress.com/2014/10/24/light-one-candle/
Throughout the world, there are many who are as horrified as you by recent events there. So sad that Canada may be forced to change some of its easy-going, welcoming ways, which we so much appreciated in our only visit there.

Margaret, thank you for your thoughtfulness in forwarding the link to that post, which I just read. It was lovely. We are all horrified in Canada … even though the events of last week do not compare to many others in the world. Those men and women who offer themselves to serve and protect citizens and countries, hold special places in our hearts no matter where we reside. Security in Canada will be tightened, without question, and I agree that is a sad state of affairs. Such is the real world these days.

Such a terrible tragedy. My thoughts and prayers are with this hero’s family. May he rest in peace and justice prevail over evil.

What thoughtful words, Patricia. In fact, he was the second armed services member to be murdered last week. In Quebec, a self-described jihadist purposely drove his car at two soldiers and killed Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent.

Totsy, I know exactly what sort of highly effective rant you could do about these kinds of senseless acts. Thanks for being so thoughtful and stopping by.

You are right in every respect, Sue. Totally heartbreaking. There’s so much that seriously needs to be fixed in this world.
