Oct. 11 – International Day of The Girl

October 8, 2012 by Patricia Sands Leave a Comment

Last December, the United Nations’ General Assembly officially designated October 11 as the International Day of The Girl. This Thursday, Canada and nations around the world will focus on raising awareness of the particular challenges that girls face and implement plans to take action.

Girls will be recognized as powerful agents of change and as leaders of today and tomorrow, and girl-specific issues will be highlighted.

The Canadian government led the resolution at the UN and over 100 member nations have already pledged their support. Individually we can all show our support in many ways and most easily by spreading the word and getting involved. Let’s face it, we women know how to communicate!

Every girl is someone’s daughter. Let’s make all daughters proud by honouring them and working toward gender equality and girls’ rights everywhere on this planet.

Here are some excellent links for more details on the subject. Please pass the information on and see how you can get involved with whatever your community plans for this landmark occasion.

I’m proud to be a member of the Canadian Women’s Foundation. I urge you to consider becoming involved in one of their innovative programs.

As a women’s foundation, we specialize in helping women and girls move out of violence, out of poverty, and into confidence.

 CWF MISSION

We invest in the power of women and the dreams of girls. The Canadian Women’s Foundation raises money to research, fund and share the best approaches to ending violence against women, moving low-income women out of poverty and building strong, resilient girls.

As we celebrate Thanksgiving in Canada, what better time to be reminded of our own good fortune and the struggles of others, near and far. We are in this life together so let’s pay it forward in whatever ways possible.

Here’s the challenge dear readers – UNLEASH THE POWER!

Patricia – What a glorious way to reach out and help girls everywhere learn they do not have to be victims of their environment. I remember all those years ago when we were invited to take our daughters to school for one day during the year. I often wondered if this meant the daughter of a waitress equated to thinking she couldn’t become a doctor, a physicist, or some other equally challenging field. I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with being a waitress — I was one once -it paid the bills – but I like this new new holiday you talk about. Thanks for bringing it to our attention.

I keep wondering why it remains such a struggle in so many places. The louder we shout hopefully the more we will be heard so that all girls have the opportunities only some of us enjoy today. Thanks for passing on the message however you can.

Another fabulous opportunity to help our world be a better place. I love the ‘Because I am a girl’ adds I’ve been seeing on TV. Thank you for all the great links. I need to see if the US has a program like your Canadian Women’s Foundation. We must. Every girl IS someone’s daughter and every girl deserves the same rights my daughter has. I still can’t believe there are places in the world where girl’s aren’t valued and can be treated in abysmal ways. We need to make sure everyone knows that girls are valuable, they are worthy of being treated like the precious individuals they are.

Exactly! It’s hard to believe we still need to talk about this.

Reblogged this on Natalie Hartford and commented:
Today marks the FIRST International Day of the Girl; a day to make a different in the lives of girls and young women as citizens and as powerful voices of change in their families, communities, and their nations. International Day of the Girl is about highlighting, celebrating, discussing, and advancing girls lives and opportunities across the globe. Patricia Sands did a wonderful blog post about the day with links to resources and ways you can show your support.
