For a few weeks now you may have noticed me talking on Twitter or Facebook about a documentary project being prepared for Sundance called The Wireless Generation.
Here’s the skinny on it.
“ABOUT THIS FILM
The internet has changed everything. Not just how we work, but where. Working from home in the US has increased dramatically in recent years and they estimate that by 2016, 63 million Americans will work from home at least part time (Source: 2011 Forester Research).
We wanted to look at the edges of this movement, the people who are not just working from home and keeping the status quo, but those who are taking this new freedom — the opportunity to choose to live anywhere without having to consider workplace location — and what happens next.
If you shift your life from being centered around where you to work, to being centered around how you want to live, what happens? Where would you go if you could go anywhere in the world?”
Drew and Christine Gilbert’s website is here. I hope you find the time to go and get to know them. Christine’s posts are often hilarious in their honesty and her ability to go with the flow no matter where they happen to be living.
Their dedication and professionalism to this project is serious and I truly believe the subject matter is such an authentic representation of how opportunities are changing in our world for people who have the right set of circumstances to take their work wherever they please.
Check out their Facebook page and send them a photo of you wherever in the world you are working on your laptop. At the very least it’s an inspiration to dream big if travel is your passion.
One of our sons is working on his laptop right now from France. I wrote most of my soon-to-be-published (yippee!! – sorry, just lost it there for a sec – it will still be a few months) next novel from France last summer after beginning it in Florida and finishing it here in Toronto. A 20-something and a 60-something as part of the Wireless Generation in our family! Love it!
You may well be doing the same thing or thinking about it. If you can make it work, why not? This documentary is about some folks who ARE making it work. It’s interesting, relevant, and a story that should be told. Please help support this by passing the word around. They are doing brilliantly on Kickstarter and with just six days left to jump on board every little bit helps. Got $5 to spare?

Is this a dream of yours or have you already made it happen? Does it even appeal to you? How are you following your dreams?
Forgive a little shameless self-promotion here, but I’m following my dream too! The Bridge Club is the Book Of The Day on eReaderNews today. If you can pop over and like their page and tweet it up a storm, that would be magnifique. Thanks. Here’s the link:
Alright! TBC is up on eReaderNews. Here’s the tweet and if you have time to like the Facebook page that would be SO appreciated! Thanks a million. Feel free to add your own comment or hashtags.

Again, this is one of the reasons I adore you, Patricia. You always find the most interesting projects and bring them to our attention. Kickstarter is such an amazing thing ~ it allows us to get involved in thing we’d otherwise never know about and conversely, projects would never get made. I look forward to checking out the website more and learning about their documentary. I do love that we can work from anywhere. It’s truly a fascinating time to be alive.
What I like about Kickstarter is how they carefully vet the projects they allow on their site. The Wireless Generation truly deserves to be successful.
I like working at home, but think it’s less that and more that I’m not really the 9-5 type. My interpreting work takes me out of the house, but I love going to different jobs and having the time flexibility to go home and work more!
It sounds like you have a really good mix, Angela. Good for you for putting together a regimen that works for you!
Interesting stuff, Pat.
Thanks, David. Even geezers like us can be part of it!
Wow! This sounds amazing to me right now. I will definitely check out their project. Although it’s kind of freaky to think of your forecast for how much we could be working from home or anywhere. Hope we don’t totally lose human contact.
You know, Jess, the people I talk to you who are working from interesting locations actually seem to get out and interact more with people as they explore different parts of the world. I truly feel you can have the same effect even if you are working from your hometown. There’s always something new to explore. I agree with you that we don’t want to lose the human contact.
oops – got an extra “you” in there!
What a cool Kickstarter project! I’ve been pretty selective with how I get involved (it’s so easy to lose yourself on Kickstarter and want to fund everything) but this looks like a worthy cause.
I’ve been doing a ton of contracting this year and boy, am I glad for the internet! No commutes, no bosses looking over your shoulder. A friend of mine was able to move across the country and didn’t lose his job. What a world!
It’s a pretty exciting world all right! I know it isn’t possible for everyone to just pick up and go but if you have the dream you just might be able to make it come true.
Love this and I’m absolutely on board! I plan on having a mobile career. Between TV, writing and voice over projects, I already do a lot of work from home. Where in France did you write? It’s so dreamy there… I would like to write from there one day too!
Thanks for this post! Look forward to checking out the film.
Amazing Patricia. Right after commenting, I am off to check them out. Sounds seriously fantastic.
I currently don’t “officially” work from home although I am lucky to be able to have the option for days when I don’t feel well or have a family emergency. I still find so many employers are stuck in that “traditional” mind set where working from home on a regular basis isn’t ideal. And it’s a shame…just thinking of not only the lessening of our environmental footprint and the reduced cost for employers on space renting….but how happy employees make incredibly productive employees.
I do hope someday to be working from home on a more permanent basis…
Off to check out the project…you do find THE BEST stuff. And congrats on TBC being book of the day…fabulousness and can’t wait for the NEXT BOOK!!! Squeeee…
I love, love the idea of being able to work from wherever you are. The 20 years I worked for the gov. this was an idea ahead of its time–but my employees and I had to work from the field. We didn’t return to our actual location even yearly. For me – work product governs who can honestly work anywhere and those that can’t. Now, I’m off to look at the video.
It is my DREAM to work from home. I am such a homebody that when I work somewhere that requires all of the extroversion I can muster, all I want to do at day’s end is curl up in bed and never get out of my jammies. But in the times of my life where I’ve had extended periods off (uni, etc.), I go out more and have the energy to be more social.
Here’s hoping I can figure out a job that will allow me to do it.
