Thank you, Nora Ephron

Whenever I want to be reminded of smart, funny, poignant, meaningful writing, I read something written by Nora Ephron. Screenwriter, film maker, novelist, essayist and brilliant speaker, she was also a prolific blogger.

Her talent was a constant inspiration to many women pursuing the dream of becoming a writer and a source of tremendous enjoyment to all readers – and viewers – of her work. I love *laugh out loud* moments and Ephron was a master of the art.

The first book of hers that I read was “Heartburn”, back in the 1980’s and I’ve been a fan ever since.

Nora Ephron passed from this life today and she will be missed.

The New York Times has an excellent obituary which can be read by clicking here.

This link will take you to videos of five classic scenes from her movies. The one below is my all-time favourite from When Harry Met Sally.

The following is a list of just her film credits. Pretty amazing, isn’t it? Which one was a favourite of yours?

You are right, August, she broke a lot of “rules” in the early days and made things much easier for the women who followed.

I attended a workshop by her sister Hallie last year and I can see the resemblance in the photo. What a loss of a talented woman. Still so young at 71.

71 is looking younger and younger! Lucky you to have attended one of Hallie’s workshops. Is she as funny as Nora?

I never had the pleasure of meeting Nora, but Hallie was very personable and entertaining – and yes, she had a good sense of humour.

Natalie, that’s so cool that you were inspired to blog as a result of her work. Ephron’s movie list can provide you and the Hubster with many good evenings of cuddling!

Yes indeed, Tameri! Now it’s up to women who share that same wicked sense of humour to pick up the torch. I’m talking about you, girlfriend!

I’ve known her name, I’ve known her projects, but with so few had I put two + two together. Thanks for the list. Love her humour, so many films on the list are favourites.

Totsy .. I just popped over to your very entertaining blog. It may well be none of my business but … what the heck is a good ol’ southern gal like you doing in The Kingdom?

Making a little dough. Trying to live a quiet existence. Learning how to cook. Sleeping better. Finding new ways to be bored. All that.

I’ll be reading up on your new ways to be bored. You certainly picked an interesting part of the world to pursue that!

Thanks for your post – it was a great tribute to her. She was a real trailblazer and an inspiration to us all. I also blogged about Nora. It was interesting to see what different things we chose to highlight. Check it out if you have a chance. http://akandrew.com/nora-ephron-pioneer-in-womens-cinema/

Taking a quick break to stop in and say thanks for this tribute to Nora Ephron. Loved her! Saw almost all of her movies and loved her book, I Hate My Neck. She will be missed but will live forever in her stories!
That scene from When Harry Met Sally is my favorite, too!

I hope you take a few breaks, my dear, with all that re-writing going on! I totally agree about Ephron’s “Neck” book = hilarious. I’m going to reread all her work.
