A hex on Hurricane Irene!

August 26, 2011 by Patricia Sands 10 Comments

If it’s Friday … well, this Friday, we need to be thinking about everyone who will be affected by this terrible storm!

I simply can’t bring myself to post about another wonderful day on the Côte D’Azur when so many people on the East Coast of the United States and Canada are waiting to see what this massive storm may bring in the next day or two. My thoughts are with them.

I’ll bring you back to France next Friday.

In the meantime this inukshuk is here to point the way to safety as Hurricane Irene approaches. An inukshuk (also spelled inuksuk, plural: inuksuit), is an Inuit word that literally translated means “stone man that points the way” and is symbolic of the human spirit.  They are stone cairns that were originally erected by Inuit at prominent locations throughout the barrens to serve as guideposts or markers. The Inukshuk symbolism is far reaching – they were a beacon to those looking for the right direction and a safe passage. I hope this one guides you and yours safely through the storm.

The hands of many and the efforts of an entire group were required to build these massive sculptures. They are the result of a consensus of purpose, of focused action by a united group, and teach us that as good as our individual efforts may be, together we can do even greater things.

Together we are all focused on your safety.

Oh, I love this bit of history, Patricia! Now, I’m going to have to Google it and find out even more! I’m fortunate to be far enough inland not to get too much of the storm, but we are expecting 45 mph winds and a lot of rain..probably tomorrow. So, I’m enjoying the sunny afternoon we have right now. Have a beautiful day where you are!

I almost feel badly looking at yet another beautiful day here … although we did have an amazing storm last night with wind and lightning. It made us even more aware (although just slightly by comparison!) of what the East Coast might face. We thought it was quite coincidental! I’m glad you had a lovely afternoon yesterday and fingers crossed for today!

What a lovely thought. Sending be-safe thoughts to all east coasters.

On another thought, I didn’t realize I wasn’t following. Taken care of. Looking forward to more France next week.

As I was driving to work listening to the radio today, I was wondering if the hurricane would affect my hike tomorrow. Then the reporter announced that 65 million people needed to be evacuated from the the east coast of the U.S. That’s almost twice as much as the entire population of Canada. I can’t imagine being is that situation. So what if I have to postpone my hike. They’ll be in my prayers for the next few days.

I hope you still get to go hiking! Just imagine the logistical nightmare of moving so many people. I learned that during evacuations like this, the highways are all turned into one-way roads on both sides in order to move as many vehicles as possible. Still a nightmare!

The inukshuk almost looks like the Chinese symbol for “big”. My DH is on the east coast right now…actually looking forward to his first hurricane. As a CA native, he can’t help himself.

    Hope everyone stays safe.

I hope your DH is disappointed – LOL! We’ve been through a couple of Category 3 hurricanes in south Florida and they are scary. I’ve never seen so much rain fall non-stop nor heard the constant roar of wind (like a train in your house) for 13 hours straight. When we were finally able to go outside, it looked like a war zone. Fortunately there was no loss of life but we were without power for 9 days and many people lived with tarps over their vanished rooftops for months as insurance companies sorted things out. I know that’s nothing compared to what others may experience from Mother Nature. We were lucky. Let’s hope there is a lot of luck over the weekend for the East Coast.
I’m going to look up the Chinese symbol. That’s an interesting and fitting coincidence.

Patricia, thank you for sharing the history and picture of inukshuk. I must admit I’ve never heard about this before. Such strong spiritual monuments (just like stonehenge and others) are reminders of the unbelievable power of humanity, which we so often forget. Blessings, and stay safe, everyone!

I hope you are in a safe place. Are you in NYC at the moment?
