MIAMI BOOK FAIR – Friday and Saturday

November 22, 2010 by Patricia Sands

On Friday, my super supportive husband and I drove down to the Miami Book Fair and were pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to find. Coincidentally, Friday was “School Day” and there were thousands of children of all ages eagerly checking out all the booths. Fortunately I had taken postcards for the teen novel “Masks” written by my friend and fellow iUniverse author Patricia Caviglia  (Click here for her website.). The timing was perfect with all the school children looking for new books to read. Patricia Caviglia’s excellent writing skills weave a story filled with important lessons for teenagers and parents.

Yesterday, Saturday, I spent the day at the Book Fair with Janice, my friend and Florida “mentor” for promoting The Bridge Club. After months of e-mailing, telephoning, and skyping, it was such a pleasure to finally be standing in front of each other. The hug was a big one!

What a day we had amongst the literati! We walked the Book Fair from one end to the other handing out The Bridge Club postcards and chatting with readers, authors, and book-lovers in general. The response was great and the weather perfect so it was the best combination for strolling and chatting.

It was a thrill to see my novel displayed along with other iUniverse Rising Star authors and a great pleasure to meet Joy Owens from iUniverse. Again, after months of communicating by e-mail it was so nice to meet her in person. Along with all of this activity, Janice and I managed to catch five author presentations – among them, Michele Norris from NPR, Emilio Estefan, and the best way to end the day, the amazing Salman Rushdie – awesome, as expected.
This was the 27th year for the Book Fair and the diversity of programing and the eclectic mix of the 350 visiting authors was impressive. It is truly an experience not to be missed for people in the area and reminded me of Toronto’s own Word On The Street that is held in late September every year. If you’ve never gone, mark it down for 2011!

The Book Launch was a blast!

November 11, 2010 by Patricia Sands

On Monday evening we launched The Bridge Club in style at the Gladstone Hotel. The Fabulous Quitters provided fantastic music and helped immensely to make the event a great success. I’ll get photos and possibly some video up here shortly.  Thanks to everyone who came and made the party one to remember. Nicole, your cake was unbelievable and I’ve been receiving phone calls  ever since with everyone saying it was the best cake they ever tasted! As I warned you, I ate it for breakfast yesterday, and also for lunch, and – oh yeah – dinner too. I told you I shouldn’t take any home!!!!

I have so much to talk about and so little time. I’m having another interview on Liquid Lunch tomorrow at 1 p.m. so catch it if you can. Thank you to the readers who are sending me e-mails about how they enjoyed The Bridge Club, related to the characters, and are sharing wonderful stories about their own friends. Keep them coming!

This week is flying by in a blur as we get ready to hit the road and drive to Florida on Sunday a.m. bright and early. We should be at our house in Deerfield Beach by Monday evening.

And now! My fabulous intro at the launch:

Nicholas Hoare Books – thank you!

November 5, 2010 by Patricia Sands

I feel incredibly fortunate to have my book carried in the Nicholas Hoare bookstore, 45 Front Street, Toronto, as of today. It’s such a beautiful store and you recognize the British connection as soon as you enter. Warm wood floors, a high ceiling and light-filled space with enormous bookshelves accessed by ladders, invite you to browse their amazing selection of literature.  The staff are knowledgeable and welcoming. Thank you to Maxeen!

If you are in downtown Toronto, do drop in!

… and remember, in the west end Kingsway neighbourhood visit

The Book Mark and in Burlington, A Different Drummer Books.

All extremely special stores with the very best of personal service.
