Nora Bennett enjoys a comfortable life in northern Ontario, where she lives and writes in an 1850s cottage she inherited from her grandmother. Widowed after the sudden death of her husband, Jeremy, she remained single while raising their daughter, Chloe, who’s now an artist living in Paris with her husband, Olivier.

As the Christmas season approaches, Nora finds herself suffering from an intractable case of writer’s block. With progress on her latest novel at a standstill, she accepts Chloe’s offer to come to Paris for the holidays. While there, Nora stays in the apartment of Chloe and Olivier’s neighbor, Giselle Tremblay, caring for her dog, Atticus, while Giselle is in Mexico.

The trip proves to be the inspiration Nora needs when she meets Giselle’s aunt Marie-Louise and starts writing about the older woman’s experiences during World War II. Amid the festive atmosphere of Paris at Christmas, Nora is embraced by Olivier’s family and establishes a surprising connection with Olivier’s taciturn father, Pierre.

When Giselle informs Nora of a serious health crisis and asks her to extend her stay, Nora wonders if she should return to Canada or explore new possibilities in the City of Love.

Sands’ novel is a lovely, effervescent romance replete with well-developed characters and vividly drawn settings. Nora Bennett is an engaging protagonist whose last-minute holiday trip to Paris becomes a journey of self-discovery, both in her work and in love. Her relationship with Pierre unfolds gradually and believably as she discovers the compassionate man underneath the gruff exterior.

The author deftly balances Nora’s love story with her work researching and writing a nonfiction book about Marie-Louise’s life in Paris during the German occupation. Sands’ writing is strong and assured, especially when describing the Paris markets at Christmastime (“Scents of spicy gingerbread, roasted chestnuts, and other exotic baked goods floated out from stalls and combined with the songs of carolers sauntering the streets”).
