In Marlie, Anneli Purchase had painted a picture of Haida Gwaii, and Masset in particular, that moves far beyond the endless tourist promotions for the place. Reading the puff pieces in the glossy magazines one would never believe that real people live there, people with hopes and dreams and sometimes a nasty side as well. Yes, the scenery can be breathtaking but after months of greyness and rain of a HG winter there can be changes in one’s outlook on life. Read Marlie. Meet a real person who has lived there. Understand how a real person learns to cope and thrive. You’ll enjoy the trip and it won’t cost you a fortune to get there.
